The Legend of Leonys Martin

In his AA debut Leonys Martin had a lot of expectations coming into this game. Martin as you may recall is the Cuban defector who the Texas Rangers signed to a five year deal. The deal was for approximately 15 million dollars and came with an impressive 5 million dollar signing bonus. Martin was assigned to the Rangers AA team in Frisco who took on the Astros AA team the Corpus Christi Hooks.

Leonys Martin at his signing

In Martin’s first at bat last night for the Frisco RoughRiders, he drove a ball off the wall in centerfield for a double and scored a run in the first inning. In the third inning he hit a single and was thrown out trying to steal. In the bottom of the eighth Leonys doubled to right and drove in a run. Then Leonys was successful in stealing third.

On the night he was 3 for 5 with an RBI and a stolen base. This was impressive to say the least, I’ll be curious to see how long he sticks around at the Double-A level.
