Kins joined the Texas Rangers via the 17th round of the 2003 Major League Baseball Amateur draft. He was the 496 overall pick and was chosen from the University of Missouri at Columbus. Fellow Rangers Doug Mathis, Nicholas Tepesch and Brett Nicholas are also alums of Missouri.

Kinsler is 29 years old and is married to wife Tess with two children. 3 year old daughter Riann and son Jack who is 9 months old with whom he took paternity leave in June 2011 to be present for the birth of his son. He is 6’0” and is said to weigh 200 pounds. Ian is a right hand hitter and throws right handed. In 2008 and 2010 he was selected to the All Star game.
