Payano will be starting his 3rd year in the Texas Rangers farm system. He is also just now 19 years old. The Dominican Republic native played in Spokane in 2011 and in the Dominican Summer League in 2010. The left hander stands 6’5” and 185 pounds.
He went 2-5 in Spokane with .544 ERA and a WHIP of 1.667. Without a doubt 2011 was a down year for the young hurler. With decreases in every major statistical category Payano will be on a short leash to perform during the first half of the 2012 campaign. Hopefully he can return to his performance levels while at the DZL where he posted an ERA of 3.4 and a WHIP of 1.351.
Another player to keep an eye on will be 1st round draft pick, 37th overall, of the 2011 MLB amateur draft Zachary Cone. The University of Georgia player will be a fixture in the Crawdad outfield this year. He played at Spokane in 2011 after being drafted and posted offensive numbers of .201/.278/.339. While his bat can use improvement he showed his speed with 11 stolen bases.
Hopefully the weather will hold out today and the Hickory Crawdads can get their season under way.
