Starting pitcher Jerad Eickhoff struggled through most of his outing. He went a mere 4.2 innings in which he gave up 7 runs, only 5 were earned. The Tourists had 7 hits including a home run; they drew 1 walk and were struck out 3 times. His ERA is now 4.66 and is 1-1 on the year.
Christopher Hanna came in and quickly established his dominance over Asheville. He held them to 1 run and 2 walks over 3.1 innings and gave the Crawdads the ability to try to come back into the game.
In the 9th Phil Klein came on to pitch, and with the way Hanna was pitching it had to be a matter of pitch count. The decision to bring Klein in quickly was questioned by the Crawdads faithful. In the single inning he pitched he gave up 2 runs on 3 hits, including a homerun.
Defensively the Crawdads really struggled this game. Chris Grayson had an error on bloop hit that should have been allowed to fall and take the single. Luis Sardinas has 2 errors one each for throwing and fielding. Even Rougned Odor had a throwing error.
Chris Grayson remains hot; he went 2-5 with a strikeout and is now hitting .455. Both of his hits were doubles.
The loss is Hickory’s 3rd of the year and pushes the Crawdads record to 6-3 so far. In the previous two series the Crawdads have had a loss due to a single inning; this loss appears to be following in that mold. If it is then there is a lot of reasons to be optimistic about tonight’s match.
In the spirit of great A level promotions; the first 1000 people into the game tonight will receive a country music star Eric Church bobble head doll. Church is a native of nearby Granite Falls.
Go Crawdads and Go Rangers!
