Geovany Soto is officially back with the Rangers.
Jon Heyman confirmed the re-signing around 45 minutes ago. He reports that the deal is for around $3mil for 1 year.
This signing makes sense in light of Mike Napoli officially signing with the Boston Red Sox today. Texas will most likely be talking to Toronto this week and most likely with A.J. Pierzynski and Kelly Shoppach while everyone is in Nashville.
I know Yu Darvish didn’t need a “personal catcher” here in the U.S. but Soto did provide some consistency for Darvish and the pairing was a rewarding one down the stretch. When being guided exclusively by Soto, Darvish went 6-2, 2.39 with an opponents’ slash line of .179/.235/.260. When paired with Napoli or Yorvit Torrealba, Darvish went 13-8, 4.57 with a .238/.342/.377 slash. Defensively, Soto is a good thing. Offensively… well, we’ll see what Dave Magadan can do.
