The Texas Rangers announced just a little while ago that they have signed catcher Geovany Soto to a one year contract worth around $3 million, plus a few incentives according to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com. Over the last two seasons Geo has appeared in 101 games for the Texas Rangers with a line of .220/.291/.402 with 14 home runs and 47 RBI. Soto has thrown out roughly 25% of the potential base stealers against him. He has a catchers ERA of 3.79 during his time with the Rangers.
I like this signing as I think he and Yu Darvish seem to work well together, and there were a few times during the last season that he seemed to really come through offensively when the Texas Rangers needed a big hit while he was in the game. Obviously, I wouldn’t be real happy if Geovany Soto became our no. one catcher, but I like the Rangers getting him to back somebody up for 2014.
