Peoria, Arizona – Texas Rangers outfielder Engel Beltre is battling for a spot on the 25-man roster.  His main competition for the spot is Michael Choice, who is making an excellent argument that he should get the spot instead.

Today, Beltre was penciled in the the lineup against the San Diego Padres, but about 30 minutes after the lineup was released, Beltre was taken out of the lineup again for the second straight day.

Beltre has been bothered by left shin splints.  It appears the issue was worsened during workouts prior to the Padres game.

Spring Training 2014 Stats

Engel Beltre 2013 Stats

  • 22 games
  • 40 at-bats
  • Batting Line .250/.268/.275/.543
  • 1 double
  • 1 stolen base

So far Beltre does have some good stats.  If he’s able to stay healthy, he does have a good chance to beat out Michael Choice.  The main reason is he is out of options.  That means the Texas Rangers can’t just out right him to the minors like they can Choice.  But if injures and on field issues continue, Choice could be the man that makes the roster.
