Texas Rangers Moves

The Texas Rangers surprise everybody today by sending Michael Choice down to the minors and calling outfielder Jake Smolinski to take his place. The Texas Ranger also designated Donnie Murphy for assignment and called up right handed pitcher Roman Mendez. And tonight’s starter is rumored to be Phil Irwin (who?).

Look, everyone knows that the Texas Ranger are having some problems hitting and pitching the ball of late, and Michael Choice was struggling mightly in the ball hitting department. The Nick Martinez injury made it difficult on the Texas Rangers on who should start tonight, and instead of going with Scott Baker again, they decided on AAA starter Phil Irwin. Iwrin was 4-1 with a 2.41 ERA in 6 starts for Round Rock. So why Irwin and not Luke Jackson or someone else? I can’t answer that question, I just know when you have to replace on player that should be pitching in the minors with anoteher, you are probably in bad shape.

Jake Smolimski had a line of .267/.353/.467 at Round Rock this season. I think this choice was less about Jake and more about getting Michael some time to try and get it together in the minors.

I expect to see more moves like this as the Texas Rangers go forward.
