Speculation-based posts aren’t my usual cup of tea, but I think that this speculated topic has some legitimate merit worth exploring. As you very well know by now, Jurickson Profar, the 20-year old, top-rated prospect in all of MLB has been in a handful of trade rumors. From a mused, Profar-for-Oscar Taveras swap, to more realistic propositions of Profar (plus others) for Giancarlo Stanton or David Price, Profar’s name has certainly been bandied about.

May 20, 2013; Arlington, TX, USA; Texas Rangers second baseman Jurickson Profar (13) throws to first during the game against the Oakland Athletics at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
So that brings us to this: Are there any true motivations for the Rangers to trade such a prospect of Profar’s caliber?

Absolutely.

Just this April, the Rangers signed current shortstop, Elvis Andrus, to an 8-year, $120MM extension, and last April, the Rangers agreed to a 5-year, $75MM extension with second baseman, Ian Kinsler. Regardless of Profar, the Rangers are set in the middle infield for the present and future, not to mention up and coming middle infield prospects such as Luis Sardinas, whom are finding their way up many prospect rankings. The Rangers simply don’t appear to have an open spot for Jurickson Profar at the MLB level at his natural position(s), which brings us to this question:

What exactly is Jurickson Profar’s trade value?

Well, to properly assess a prospect’s trade value, one must assess the prospect’s toolset, his expected ceiling and floor, followed by his make up. There is a reason why Profar is the No. 1 rated prospect in all of baseball. To begin, Profar displays a full arsenal of average, to above-average tools across the board. Not a one of Profar’s tools are truly elite, but none of his tools are below average, which often times makes Profar one of the best baseball players on every diamond he plays upon. Secondly, Profar displays both an extremely high ceiling and floor, meaning that if Profar can develop into the peak of his talents, he could become a perennial MVP candidate or at worst, an above average middle infielder at the MLB level. Lastly, Profar has elite make up. There have been numerous write-ups describing Profar’s top-notch instincts and baseball IQ, which usually lends a major hand in predicting just how far a prospect can develop.

To put it simply, Profar is a scout’s dream: An exceptional prospect at a premium position with elite make up and highly projectable tools. Profar is the type of prospect that other teams would demand in a high-profile trade, such as the rumored, Stanton or Price scenarios. The Rangers do not have any needs for a middle infielder at the MLB level, but the team certainly has a need for a corner outfielder (Stanton) or a starting pitcher (Price).

Which brings us to the ultimate point of this post: Why the Rangers will not trade Jurickson Profar.

Obviously, holding onto Profar would imply that the Rangers will eventually be asking that Ian Kinsler and/or Mitch Moreland move positions in 2014. In this scenario, either Kinsler moves to left field in 2014 and Profar goes to second base, or Kinsler movies to first base with Moreland taking over in left field or right field, with Profar again taking over at second base. Logically, both of these moves do make sense but also do not make sense at the same time. It is rather clear however, that David Murphy and/or Nelson Cruz will not be in Texas in 2014, meaning that Ian Kinsler’s or Mitch Moreland’s bat in a COF position would be highly welcome, but then again, so would Giancarlo Stanton’s.

It is no secret that the Rangers have the assets to acquire players of Stanton and Price’s caliber, and that holding onto Jurickson Profar is probably not the decision with the biggest impact, but let us quickly look back at the Justin Upton rumblings during the offseason.

During the Winter Meetings, it was clear that Arizona intended to trade their young slugger, and right from the beginning, it was mentioned that Arizona coveted both of the Rangers’ shortstops in a potential deal, but Texas was extremely reluctant to deal Andrus or Profar and instead tried to build a package around Mike Olt. Remember, at the time it was speculated that Texas was simply posturing in an attempt to raise Andrus’ trade value, as it seemed extremely unlikely that the team would extend Andrus. Additionally, it made more financial sense to acquire a young, power hitter in Upton and go with a stud prospect at shortstop in Profar, whom would be making league minimum. Yet, the consistent dialogue coming from Jon Daniels was that the Rangers preferred to keep Andrus and Profar. Daniels also voiced the Rangers’ desire to extend Elvis Andrus, which indeed ended up happening (so much for that being nothing more than a posturing tactic).

Which brings us to this interesting quote from GM Jon Daniels when questioned on the possibility of extending Andrus:

Our preference would be to continue to have a good [thing] probably, meaning with Kinsler, Elvis and Profar, have three guys with two positions. We would love to extend Elvis. We extended Ian, obviously Jurickson is going to be here for some time, and we would love to extend Elvis.

If there is one thing that I’ve learned in all of my years of following Jon Daniels’ tenure as the Rangers’ GM, it is that when Daniels goes out of his way to say something, he usually means it. Daniels went out of his way to state the team’s desire to keep and extend Andrus, and it ended up happening. I don’t think it’s inconceivable that with the emergence of mega television deals in the game today and the affects that these deals have already had on the free agent market, that the Rangers are reluctant to trade Jurickson Profar. Obviously moving Kinsler to left field would lower his value, as his bat would probably be considered average for a COF, but then again, there aren’t many cheaper external alternatives in terms of the cost of cash and prospects and additionally, Kinsler would most certainly be an upgrade over David Murphy. It would essentially be a cost-effective, internal upgrade.

The Rangers certainly have the necessary motivations to trade Jurickson Profar, but given the way that the team has operated, I quite honestly don’t see such a trade ever materializing. As an organization, the Rangers view the year of 2015 as momentous (2015 is the year that the television deal begins). Anything between now and then is ultimately important. Take this quote from Rangers’ co-owner, Bob Simpson as evidence:

Success follows success. By 2015 the goal is that this team will be self-sustaining, but our payroll may be another 40 or 50 percent higher. So that will move you up to a level where you should field a great team year after year. We just need to bridge the gap [between now and the TV contract] to get this great franchise to permanent success.

This quote could imply one of many things, but to me, self-sustaining implies a team that develops its own talent. Jurickson Profar is the result of Texas’ scouting and developmental departments. Utilizing cheap, yet top-notch, young talent is what self-sustenance is all about. The Rangers have often employed the actions of a team with big market resources making decisions like a small market club. If anything, small market clubs don’t deal their No. 1 prospects. The Rangers will not trade Jurickson Profar because the Rangers aren’t wary of making the moves with the littlest impact, just take the Justin Upton “fiasco” as an example. The Rangers are primarily concerned with sustaining a winning organization, and Jurickson Profar is the type of player that provides incredible value for an organization. Profar is simply the kind of player that teams do not trade for anybody. Incidentally, David Price is a free agent after the 2015 season—Go figure.

I knew that we had been in on Mike Napoli when his original deal with the Red Sox fell apart. (3 year, $39 million deal now an incentive laden one-year contract worth a reported $5 million — as much as $13 million based on certain incentives.) As it turns out Napoli has a pretty serious medical condition with his hips. It’s called avascular necrosis. A side note, in reading up on the condition, there are many possible causes but one of the first ones on the list is steroid use. There are many others, I just found that interesting in diagnosing such a big guy with one great year.

Regardless of that or the lack of being nowhere close to his 2011 numbers in 2012, Napoli brought something to the team that we had been sorely missing. We had Michael Young’s quiet lead by example leadership, but Napoli was the on-field cheerleader. He could get the team and the crowd fired up at the drop of a dime. Who does that now? Kinsler? Andrus?

Will anyone step up with Mike Napoli like fire?

It’s an important asset that you can’t just assume. But the fans bought it. There was the chant NAP-OH-LI. It worked. He was active on Twitter and his battle with C.J. Wilson as the season started last year set the tone and gave us a real “knock this off I dare you” mentality. We watched Napoli basically do that for the Angels against us in the years leading up to his Ranger time. There was no chant at the Ballpark then. In fact he was so lethal against us, it was a simple but resounding chorus of boo birds.

It remains to be seen if it was good or bad for the Rangers to not be able to give Napoli what he needed to stay a Ranger. Right now, it looks like sound judgment in erring on the side of caution. That was our theme during all of the off-season. But losing Napoli we lose over 20 homers which is probably replaceable, but something that isn’t as easily replaced.

Wrapping things up, you have to wonder if the Diamondbacks weren’t insistent on Andrus or Profar until they ultimately traded Justin Upton to the Braves. Whatever the reason, according to reports we were in it until the end of Kevin Towers self-imposed “I have to go on my vacation Friday” deadline. But now the question for Ranger fans to ponder. Do we give up a draft pick and Boras dollars for Bourn? Do we try to make a deal for Jason Kubel when Towers gets home from vacation? Or do we stand pat and pray Nellie Cruz has strengthened his legs even more and going with Craig Gentry and Leonys Martin in center field?

Still some things to ponder in the remaining 27 days before pitchers and catchers report.

Coming into the 2013 off-season, I wanted the Texas Rangers to sign Zack Greinke more than anyone else that was available, until I saw what the Dodgers actually paid for him. When that didn’t happen, I started looking at the Rangers’ roster differently. I imagined Texas getting a huge bat to replace Josh Hamilton in the lineup. Justin Upton was one of the first three names in my mind, behind Andrew McCutchen and Adam Jones. After all we have been through as Texas fans this winter (let’s dramatize), Upton remains easily the best and most realistic target for the Rangers in 2013. Overall, I give an Upton trade to Texas a 25% chance of happening. Compared to 5% for Kyle Lohse and %10 for Michael Bourn.

Anyways, in an early January interview with Kevin Towers on MLB.com the GM said, “Always fielding phone calls, always having discussions.” Arizona’s General Manager went on to say, “Still getting lots of hits on our outfielders. I think once we signed Cody, those people who were still looking for offense started ringing my phone. We’re in a position where unless it’s the right deal, we don’t have to move any of our outfielders.”

Eric Hinske, OF/1B, 1yr $1.35 MM — becomes FA in 2014

That’s about $27,000,000 owed to the Arizona outfielders just this coming season alone. That number will get even bigger next year. I think Towers knows he needs to make a move here or the Snakes may be in a little bit of a pickle.

“He’s (Cody Ross) a guy that we felt fit well with us short term and long term, and now we’re in more of a leveraged position with our outfielders where we can sit and wait for the right deal to come to us,” Towers said. “If it doesn’t, then we send Adam back to Triple-A and go with Parra and Ross in center and keep Upton and Kubel on the corners. If something presents itself that we think is the right deal, then we go ahead and do it and we’ve got protection because we’ve gotten Ross.”

All of this makes no sense to me, at all. The first thing that came out of Towers’ mouth when talking about signing Ross was both, “We’re in a position where unless it’s the right deal, we don’t have to move any of our outfielders.” “…and now we’re in more of a leveraged position with our outfielders where we can sit and wait for the right deal to come to us.”

Seems like he really has this all planned out… or he is shooting from the hip with a .50 caliber Barrett sniper rifle. Excuse the Call Of Duty reference. Towers has showed interest in leaving Eaton at the major league level and playing him in CF every day because of his speed and defense. Now he says that he will move him to AAA if a player isn’t traded.

Gerardo Parra is probably confused because he is a Gold Glove defender in the OF and he more than likely thinks he should start everyday in the OF, as do I for that matter. Parra is around a 2.5 WAR player with more than 130 games played in each of the last two seasons. That makes him worth low 8 figures when converted into salary from fWAR. Now his 130 games will most likely sink to around 100 with this trade. I am not saying Parra is a huge asset offensively but he does his part on offense while also winning games above replacement with his defense alone (2.5 defensive WAR since 2010).

Justin Upton is a MVP-type player. He could hit 35 bombs with 120 RBIs and steal 20 bases while being above-average defensively. Or he could have a season like last season, with 17 HR, drive in 85 and steal 18 bases. Still, last season Upton was worth 2.5 fWAR. He earned his payroll. Upton’s name has been on the trade block the most, he has been linked to the Mariners, Rangers and Cubs. With the Mariners getting Michael Morse, you can cross them off the list. Cubs… probably not gonna happen unless the D-Backs want Alfonso Soriano, Brett Jackson or Anthony Rizzo… which they don’t. Starlin Castro won’t be traded to the desert unless Tyler Skaggs, Archie Bradley or Patrick Corbin are added to the deal, which they won’t be.

The Texas Rangers make the most sense. Lock up your 3B of the future with Mike Olt. Add another young arm in the future rotation with Martin Perez or Cody Buckel and add an IF in Luis Sardinas (which they don’t really need). The Rangers could also send young fire-balling relievers Wilmer Font or Roman Mendez to the Diamondbacks as a “cherry on top”. If that trade comes to fruition, the Rangers could then dump Nelson Cruz‘s salary to a championship contending team to off-set the addition of Upton’s $9.75 MM salary. JD could also send Cruz to first base, where Cruz could ease the physical strain on his somewhat frail body and fill a Texas need with one move. When asked about the Justin Upton rumor mill Towers said, “It makes no sense to even respond to that, I’ve had the same position from day one. It’s not that we’re shopping, but if people call and ask about him, we listen.”

Jason Kubel is probably the most likely to be traded among all of the outfielders because he isn’t considered a huge piece for the D-Backs like Parra (Gold Glover), Justin Upton (All-Star), and Adam Eaton (Prospect). Kubel was worth about 2 fWAR last season, even with his 30 bombs. Kubel could fit a lot of teams in the majors. If he was a 1B or even had experience there, he would be perfect for the Rangers to trade for with a smaller price than Upton. He would also go to a position with actual need.

Cody Ross will play… what position? CF? I honestly don’t get it. He may be a better hitter than Parra, but why was he signed unless Towers KNEW they would trade any of their OF this off season? I’m guessing he will split time in centerfield with Gerardo Parra. Eric Hinske… eh whatever.

In summary, Kevin Towers has made some questionable moves this off-season. With Cody Ross being added, the D-Backs have 4 potential starters who could play all 162. Ross and Kubel could platoon but so could Parra and Ross. If Kubel is traded, the OF could actually be better this year than it was last year. I believe that because Ross, Parra, and Upton are the best three pure outfielders the D-Backs have at the moment. If Justin Upton is traded, the Diamondbacks won’t lose a huge amount in the immediate future (or else they wouldn’t even have discussed a trade) but will gain a lot in the future depending on the value Upton brings. After witnessing Billy Beane and Chris Antonetti mop the floor with Mr.Towers earlier in the off-season, I can only hope Jon Daniels gets the next opportunity.
