Kirkman Collapses, Round Rock Loses Opener and Some Notes from Single-A

Tonight the Round Rock Express hosted the Iowa Cubs in their season opener. Michael Kirkman was rocked tonight, and that is being generous. Kirkman went three and a third innings allowing ten hits and ten runs. The left hander was good in the first inning allowing a triple but getting two strikeouts. Kirkman then went on to give up four runs in the 2^nd, two in the 3^rd, and four in the 4^th. Not the note a pitcher wants to start the season on.

It’s early in the season so it’s important to not get too hung up on the stats but I’m glad the Rangers went with Ogando in the rotation considering this start. Kirkman has a bright future and will eventually crack the big league roster for good, soon I would imagine.

Texas Rangers Send RHP Eric Hurley to Minor Leagues

Saturday, the Texas Rangers started making decisions regarding the upcoming 2011 MLB season. The Rangers either optioned or sent eight players to the Minor Leagues. One of those eight players was right-handed pitcher Eric Hurley despite the fact that in nine innings during three Spring Training games, he only allowed a single run. He allowed four hits and two walks while striking out five batters.

25-year-old Hurley, who has missed the last two seasons due to a torn rotator cuff as well as a broken left wrist (which he underwent operation for on three separate occasions), simply needs additional time to get the swing of things. He needs to find that strength in his arm that can withstand more than 100 innings before he can be dubbed as a starting pitcher in the rotation. (more…)

Texas Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre to Only Miss Up to Two Weeks; Other Injury News

While this is sort of old news, some of you may not have heard and since I’ve been out of the loop for a while due to dealing with an illness (me and my whole family), I’m going to write about any way.

Adrian Beltre, the newly acquired third baseman, suffered an injury to his right calf prior to the start of Spring Training camp. It is said to just be a Grade 1 strain, per the results of a conducted MRI, so nothing incredibly serious but he is expected to miss a couple of weeks or so. While reports had surfaced that the 31-year-old may have to miss a month, which would cause him to miss the Texas Rangers’ April 1 Opening Day game against the Boston Red Sox in Arlington, Beltre is currently expected to begin playing no later than March 10 in the Cactus League.
