March 7, Surprise, Az – Patrick Cantwell joined the Texas Rangers at spring training.  As well as adding Cantwell to camp, the Rangers sent Junior Felix to minor-league camp.

The Rangers won’t be replacing Geovany Soto or J.P. Arencibia anytime soon, but having Cantwell at camp will allow Ron Washington a chance to see what he can do and to determine if there is a need during the season, then they can call him up.

"“We look at our catching, and we start deciding if this happens or if that happens, who would be next in line,” manager Ron Washington said. “There was a lot of great conversation about Cantwell, so we decided to take a look at him. You never know what might happen.” (Dallas News – Gerry Fraley)"

Also, even without Cantwell the Rangers still have a couple of other options at catcher.  They will have Brett Nicholas who will be catching close to Arlington in Frisco and Jorge Alfaro who will be pitching with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.

Patrick was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2011 in the 39th round of the June draft from Stony Brook Universtiy.  The Rangers later drafted him in 2012 in the 3rd round in the June draft.
