The Texas Rangers' roster looks noticeably different than last year. During the offseason, president of baseball operations Chris Young has done his best to improve the team's offense, which ranked 26th among MLB teams in OPS (.683) last season, by non-tendering struggling hitters Adolis García and Jonah Heim, trading a strong defender in Marcus Semien for a consistent bat in Brandon Nimmo and adding depth pieces in catcher Danny Jansen and outfielder Andrew McCutchen.
Young has also ensured to make up for the loss of starting pitchers Tyler Mahle and Merrill Kelly by acquiring left-handed starter MacKenzie Gore from the Washington Nationals. Young also signed left-handed starter Jordan Montgomery, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery and is expected to return mid-season, to a one-year deal.
As for the bullpen, the Rangers lost multiple relievers but have done their best to piece it back together on a budget by signing Tyler Alexander, Chris Martin and Jalen Beeks, trading for promising young Rule 5 Draft pick Carter Baumler and adding several pitchers on minor-league deals.
With the roster overhaul the Rangers have gone through during the offseason, there will be some players the team may regret not doing its best to retain, and vice versa.

LHP Hoby Milner
While the Rangers have reasons to be optimistic about their bullpen, re-signing Milner would've made them even more confident in their group of relievers heading into the 2026 season. Unfortunately, Milner signed a one-year, $3.75 million deal with the Chicago Cubs in December.
Milner, who had a 3.84 ERA over 70 1/3 innings with Texas last season, allowed two runs to the Rangers in his first spring training outing with Chicago. Since then, he has allowed just one run with zero walks and six strikeouts over seven innings. It's hard to imagine that the Rangers won't miss Milner as the season progresses.

C Jonah Heim
We can acknowledge that Heim played a significant role in the Rangers' 2023 World Series title while also realizing it was the right move to let him go. In 2023, Heim posted 3.1 bWAR and a 106 OPS+ before hitting three playoff homers as the Rangers' starting catcher.
Unfortunately, Heim has regressed significantly since 2023, posting 1.1 bWAR and a 75 OPS+ in 2024, and 0.4 bWAR and a 77 OPS+ in 2025.
Heim signed a one-year deal with the Atlanta Braves after being non-tendered by the Rangers. Thus far, the catcher has gone 4-for-22 with his new club this spring. While we hope Heim has success with the Braves this season, it's hard to imagine he will return to the 2023 version of himself. Rangers fans should be content with Kyle Higashioka and Jansen behind the plate instead of Heim.
