Geovany Soto No Mo.
The Texas Rangers announced during the game today that 2014 oft injured catcher Geovany Soto has been traded to the Oakland Athletics for cash. Jeff Passan was the first to report the news this afternoon.
The Rangers are dumping catchers like files, that makes two in the last few days with Chris Gimemez going to the Indians just a few days ago. The Rangers are going to call up Tomas Telis to take Soto’s place. According to TexasRangers.com, Tomas Telis is hitting .345 with three home runs and 17 RBIs since being called up there July 17. Telis was a Texas League All-Star twice while playing for Double-A Frisco and batted .303 with two home runs and 33 RBIs in 70 games there this year. He is being called up instead of Brett Nicholas, whom I believe we will see next week during September call ups.
The Rangers are dealing away all of their veteran catchers, which must mean that they see something in Robinson Chirinos, Tomas Telis, Brett Nicholas and Jorge Alfaro. Geovany Soto was not coming back next season, we all knew that, but it is now official. So good luck to Geovany Soto in his new home, and I hope that the new Rangers catching tandem does well together!
