Former Toronto Blue Jays top prospect catcher A.J. Jimenez has joined the Texas Rangers. Recently released by the Jays, but was quickly snatched up. The Rangers see potential in the young catcher.
The 26-year-old catcher seeks to re-establish himself with the Texas Rangers. A.J. Jimenez was drafted in the 9th round of the 2008 June Amateur Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. He has potential, but has problems staying healthy.
In 2016 Jimenez hit .241/.290/.377 with four home runs and 28 RBI in 67 games. His first full season in Triple-A, but was unable to make the Major League squad. Jimenez has played in parts of four seasons in Triple-A, but only 156 total games at the level.
The potential is there, but the Jays were never able to see a full season. The most games he’s played in a single season was 102 in Single-A during the 2011 season. It’s been a rough road for Jimenez, but he can still keep his MLB dream alive.

The Rangers signed Jimenez to a one-year minor-league deal with an invite to Spring Training. It won’t be easy as Jimenez will be competing with four other non-roster invitee catchers. All are attempting to possibly grab a bench role with the Rangers.
If they can’t accomplish that, then at least an opportunity to play in the minors. Jimenez like many catchers is not known for his fantastic hitting ability. He’s a defense first type catcher, but has potential in his bat. The Rangers are excited to see what Jimenez can bring to the team, but he must fight for a spot in Spring Training.
