Jared Hoying

The Rangers non-tendered Jared Hoying in December, making him a free agent. The 27-year-old would re-sign with the team on a minor-league deal with an invite to Spring Training several days later.

Hoying’s future on the team is questionable. He didn’t show enough offense in 2016 to justify starting and played mediocre defense for a defensive replacement.

That’s not to say Jared Hoying is a bad hitter. He’s shown in the minor leagues that he possess legitimate power. Since 2013, Hoying has posted an ISO rating of .205 or higher in every season at Triple-A Round Rock.

Hoying will have to show he can replicate that power in the Major Leagues to earn a spot on the roster. He has an uphill battle to make the team if Delino DeShields can bounce back from a sophomore slump and Shin-Soo Choo can stay healthy.
