Bullpen: C

MLB Ranks – Bullpen

4.15 ERA: 18th

.254 BAA: 18th

1.38 WHIP: 18th

8 Saves: 6th

Two observations: First off, it seems the Texas Rangers have the 18th best bullpen in MLB. Secondly, Keone Kela is doing an excellent job as the team’s closer.

What to like

Kela has accounted for six saves, a 3.00 ERA and a 2-1 record. He possesses the classic closer repertoire with an upper 90s fastball and a wipeout curveball. He’s also proven the kind of success that can come from having a defined role within a bullpen.

What needs to be improved

Jeff Banister is still trying to figure out the remaining roles. He’s worked multiple relievers in the 8th inning of games, including Matt Bush, Jake Diekman, Chris Martin and Kevin Jepsen. He’s also trying to figure out how to handle a very inconsistent Alexis Claudio.

All in all, Banister needs to find some sort of structure within the pen. Unfortunately, the relief crew has not made it easy to do so. Regardless, roles need to be established in May.
