Question: Will the Texas Rangers sign Manny Machado?

Answer: No

Bad news to most, but that’s the clear indication after the Asdrubal Cabrera signing. The Rangers’ chances of signing Machado were slim to begin with. The unlikelihood definitely played into their decision to bring in a much cheaper player in Cabrera. They needed to sign someone before it was too late; who knows how much longer the two-time All-Star and 12-year vet would have been available.

Does this mean Texas is 100% out on Machado? I wouldn’t go that far, but it’s pretty close. A player of his caliber will force teams to maneuver their lineups in the craziest of ways. The Rangers could demote Cabrera to a utility role and play him for ideal matchups and to rest players. Though, he is far too good to be a utility man.

That’s about the only option for him if Machado were to sign with Texas. The rest of the infield is set in stone.

Crazy things tend to happen in sports, but the Rangers seem content with where they are offensively and defensively. It may seem like a curious decision to pass up on the free agent superstar; however, it may be for the best. The organization will save important funds for its exciting future. Also, other outstanding options will come available next offseason.
