Delino DeShields Jr.

Entering 5th season: 4.2 WAR, .244 BA, .327 OBP, 82 SB, Free Agent in 2022

Delino DeShields is an interesting case. Last season he showed significant growth on defense, but a significant decline on offense. Although he hit .216 last year, he still managed to post a 1.2 WAR for the season.

Contract Verdict: WAIT

It would be wise for the team to wait to extend him. If he has another strong season defensively, and reverts to his 2015 and 2017 self at the plate, then the team should be much more inclined to extend him. But, until he puts it all together, the best move would be to wait, especially with Leody Taveras, Bubba Thompson, Julio Pablo Martinez, and others on the way that are younger and that play the same position.

DeShields still has a few club control years left, and with the aforementioned young guys on the way, Texas can start thinking about tossing his name on the trade block.
