Texas Rangers Announce First Opponents in Globe Life Field
The Texas Rangers officially announced the first Major League team they will face to open up Globe Life Field in 2020.
The Texas Rangers announced on Friday their opponent for the first Major League game to be played in Globe Life Field next year. On March 23rd, Texas will host the St. Louis Cardinals in a Spring Training game that will mark the opening of their new ballpark currently under construction directly adjacent to Globe Life Park.
Globe Life Field is set to open with the start of the 2020 season and has garnered headlines in North Texas as the Rangers look to make the switch to a ballpark that allows them to play indoors if wanted. The retractable roof stadium has been billed as a major upgrade for the organization as it is technologically superior to Globe Life Park and should help attract a new tier of players to Arlington.
The new ballpark has had its fair share of critics with some criticizing the new turf that is set to be installed as not true to the game. Additionally, stadiums with roofs are still questioned with concern that despite the roof is retractable, the club may just opt to play all games indoors. While these concerns have their merits, the club is charging full ahead as they look to enter a new era of Texas Rangers baseball.
The announcement came the day of the opener of a 3-game series between the two clubs. All-time, Texas is 10-6 against the Cardinals but St. Louis claimed the ultimate prize besting the Rangers in the 2011 World Series.
No doubt all eyes will be on Arlington, the Rangers and Globe Life Field come next March as anticipation builds ahead of one of the biggest moments in club history.
