RHP Shawn Kelley

Texas looked to Shawn Kelley this offseason when trying to bolster their late-inning bullpen. With hopes that he could be 7th or 8th inning guy to hold games for closer Jose Leclerc, the Rangers were forced into a role reversal with Kelley taking on the closer duties with the struggles of Leclerc. Kelley has been quietly excellent this season posting a 2.79 ERA and a 1.138 WHIP in 29 appearances. He’s converted 11 of his 15 save opportunities playing a big role in the Rangers success to this point.

Whatever team might be interested in Kelley, it likely wouldn’t be as a closer which does take a little bit of value away. However, in postseason runs, a late-inning reliever is as important as ever meaning the Rangers could get a good prospect return for Kelley. Boosting his value is his team option for 2020 at just $2.5 million. Any club he goes to is likely to pick up that option meaning they’ll get him for two potential postseason runs. If Texas does go full sell, don’t be surprised if Kelley is paired with Mike Minor to maximize return for the Rangers and “kill two birds with one stone” for a contender that could use bullpen and rotation help.
