New season, new jersey numbers.

That’s the way it’s shaping up be for a handful of Texas Rangers players as the 2021 season draws nearer.

Jersey numbers are a staple of sports, oftentimes symbolizing more than just the pure number itself.

In other cases, jersey numbers represent status and/or seniority with a team.

According to The Athletic’s Levi Weaver, 11 Texas Rangers players are switching their jersey numbers for 2021, or receiving new ones because they were acquired this off-season in trades or via free agency.

A handful of Texas Rangers players have new numbers for 2021.

Among the number changes that standout for 2021 is recently signed Japanese pitcher Kohei Arihara‘s no. 35, which used to belong to another right-hander, Lance Lynn while he was on the team.

Perhaps there’s some good luck to stem from that number, as its safe to no. 35 worked out quite well for Lynn in Arlington.

Kyle Cody, who could push for a rotation spot in Spring Training, gets himself a number that will make him camouflage easier within the pitching staff this year, taking no. 54.

Free agent signee David Dahl will patrol the left field grass at Globe Life Field while wearing no. 21, a change from the no. 26 he wore with the Colorado Rockies.

Dane Dunning, who was acquired in the Lance Lynn trade, will take no. 33, a number that’s fitting for a pitcher expected to take the reigns of a young rotation in 2021.

Nate Lowe, the first baseman acquired in a trade with the Rays this off-season, will wear no. 30.

Interestingly, 2020 holdovers Leody Taveras and Jose Trevino will also sport different numbers in 2021, with Taveras taking the more traditional outfield number three, a number that fan favorite Delino DeShields Jr. wore while a member of the Texas Rangers.

As for Trevino, he’ll wear no. 23 as the projected starting backstop to begin the 2021 season, taking the number once donned by former Rangers lefty Mike Minor.
