The 2020 Texas Rangers: Where are they now?

During the month of February, I am going to be posting a series called “Where are they now?”.  In this series, the rosters for the Texas Rangers teams will be investigated.  In the 9th installment, players from the 2020 team will be examined. (All stats used were extracted from baseball-reference.com)

The pandemic-shortened season saw the Texas Rangers win 22 of 60 games, once again last place in the AL West.  This would be the 4th of five consecutive losing seasons for the Texas Rangers.

2020 Texas Rangers Starting Pitching

Lance Lynn was in his 2nd season in Texas in 2020.  In 13 starts, Lynn pitched 84.0 innings, had a record of 6-3 with a 3.32 ERA.  After the 2020 season, Lynn was traded to the Chicago White Sox in the deal that brought Dane Dunning to Texas.

Kyle Gibson was in his 1st season in Texas in 2020.  In 12 starts, Gibson pitched 67.1 innings, had a record of 2-6, and a 5.35 ERA.  Gibson started 2021 with Texas before he was traded to Philadelphia at the trade deadline.  Gibson is currently a member of the Phillies starting rotation.

Jordan Lyles was in his 1st season in Texas in 2020.  In 12 games, including nine starts, Lyles pitched 57.2 innings, had a record of 1-6, with a 7.02 ERA.  Lyles pitched for the Rangers in 2021 and is currently a free agent.

Mike Minor was in his 3rd season in Texas in 2020.  In seven starts, Minor had a record of 0-5 with a 5.60 ERA.  Minor was traded to Oakland on August 31, 2020 in a deal that brought Texas MILB Player-of-the-Year, Dustin Harris, to the Rangers organization.  Minor had four starts with Oakland in 2020, and then was granted free agency.  Minor returned to Kansas City after the 2020 season and is currently a member of the Royals starting rotation.

Kolby Allard was in his 3rd season pitching for Texas in 2020.  In 11 games, including eight starts, Allard pitched 33.2 innings, had a record of 0-6 with a 7.75 ERA.  Allard is currently a member of the Texas Rangers.

Kyle Cody was a rookie pitcher for the Texas Rangers in 2020.  In eight games, including five starts, Cody had a record of 1-1, with a 1.59 ERA.  Now 27, Cody continues to be a member of the Texas Rangers organization.

2020 Texas Rangers Bullpen

Rafael Montero was in his 2nd season in Texas in 2020.  In 17 relief appearances, Montero pitched 17.2 innings, had a record of 0-1, with a 4.08 ERA, and eight saves.  After the 2020 season, Montero was traded to Seattle.  At the 2021 trade deadline, Seattle traded Montero to Houston.  Montero is currently a member of the Astros.

Jonathan Hernandez was in his 2nd year in the Rangers bullpen in 2020.  Hernandez appeared in 27 games, had a record of 5-1, with a 2.90 ERA.  Hernandez missed the entire 2021 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.  Hernandez has resumed pitching and is expected to return to the Texas bullpen at mid-season in 2022.

Jimmy Herget was in his first season in the Texas bullpen in 2020.  In 20 games, including one spot start, Herget pitched 19.2 innings, had a record of 1-0, with a 3.20 ERA.  Herget started 2021 in the Texas bullpen.  He was granted free agency in August and signed with the Los Angeles Angels.  Herget remains a member of the Angels pitching staff.

Jesse Chavez pitched out of the Texas bullpen in 2020.  In 18 games, Chavez pitched 17.0 innings, had a record of 0-0, with a 6.88 ERA.  Chavez was granted free agency after the 2020 season.  Chavez pitched for Atlanta in 2021.  At 38, Chavez is currently a free agent.

Nick Goody primarily pitched out of the Texas bullpen in 2020.  In 17 games, including one spot start, Goody pitched 11.0 innings, had a record of 0-2, with a 9.00 ERA, and one save.  Goody pitched AAA in the New York Yankees and Washington Nationals organizations in 2021.  Goody is currently a free agent.

Wes Benjamin was a rookie with the Rangers in 2020.  In eight games, including one spot start, Benjamin pitched 22.1 innings, had a record of 2-1, with a 4.84 ERA.  Benjamin split the 2021 season between the Rangers and AAA.  After the 2021 season, Benjamin was designated for assignment and was removed from the Texas 40-man roster.

Taylor Hearn pitched out of the Rangers bullpen in 2020.  In 14 appearances, Hearn pitched 17.1 innings, had a record of 0-0, and a 3.63 ERA.  Hearn split the 2021 season between the starting rotation and the bullpen with Texas and will be given every opportunity to earn a spot in the starting rotation in 2022.

Brett Martin was in his 2nd season in the Rangers bullpen in 2020.  In 15 games, Martin pitched 14.2 innings, had a record of 1-1, and a 1.84 ERA.  Martin is entering his 5th season with Texas and should be an important part of the Rangers bullpen in 2022.

Joely Rodriguez was in his 1st season in Texas in 2020.  In 12 relief appearances, Rodriguez pitched 12.2 innings, had a record of 0-0, and a 2.13 ERA.  Rodriguez started the 2021 season with the Rangers before he was shipped to the New York Yankees with Joey Gallo.  Rodriguez is currently a member of the Yankees bullpen.

Ian Gibaut was in his 2nd and final season in the Texas bullpen in 2020.  In 14 relief appearances, Gibaut pitched 12.1 innings, had a record of 0-1, with a 6.57 ERA.  Minnesota claimed Gibaut off waivers following the 2020 season and pitched in the Twins organization in 2021.  Gibaut is currently a free agent.

John King was a rookie with the Rangers in 2020.  In six relief appearances, King pitched 10.1 innings, had a record of 1-0, with a 6.10 ERA. In 2021,  King pitched out of the bullpen for the Rangers, until he was injured and required surgery for Thoracic outlet syndrome.  King should be ready to resume regular pitching duties for the Rangers in 2022.

2020 Texas Rangers Position Players

Jeff Mathis was the primary catcher for Texas in 2020.  Mathis was in his 2nd and final season for the Rangers.  In 24 games, Mathis hit for a .161 AVG, with three HR, nine RBI’s, and one SB.  Mathis was granted free agency after the 2020 season.  Mathis played AAA in the Atlanta organization last year, and was recalled for three games with the Braves.  At almost 39, Mathis is currently a free agent.

Ronald Guzman was the primary 1B for Texas in 2020.  In 26 games, Guzman hit for a .244 AVG, with four HR, nine RBI’s, and one SB.  Guzman played seven games for the Rangers in 2021.  Guzman was granted free agency after the 2021 season.

Rougned Odor was the starting 2B for Texas in 2020.  Odor was in his 7th season playing for the Rangers.  In 38 games, Odor hit for a .167 AVG, 10 HR, and 30 RBI’s.  Odor was traded to the New York Yankees in April 2021.  In November, the Yankees released Odor and he signed a free agent contract to play with Baltimore in 2022.

Elvis Andrus was the starting SS for the Rangers in 2020.  Andrus was in his 12th and final season playing with Texas.  Andrus played 29 games and hit for a .194 AVG, with three HR, seven RBI’s, and three SB.  Prior to the 2021 season, Andrus was traded to Oakland.  Andrus played his first season in Oakland in 2021 and will return to play for the A’s in 2022.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa was the starting 3B and Gold Glove Award winner for Texas in 2020. Kiner-Falefa was in his 3rd season in Texas.  In 58 games, Kiner-Falefa hit for a .280 AVG, with three HR, 10 RBI’s, and eight SB.  Kiner-Falefa is entering his 6th season with Texas in 2022.

Nick Solak was the starting LF for the Rangers in 2020.  Solak was in his 2nd season in Texas.  In 58 games, Solak hit for a .268 AVG, with two HR, 23 RBI’s, and seven SB.  Solak is entering his 5th season in Texas in 2022.

Leody Taveras was the starting CF with Texas in 2020.  Taveras was a rookie with the Rangers.  In 33 games, Taveras hit for a .227 AVG, with four HR, six RBI’s, and eight SB.  Taveras will be entering his 3rd season in Texas in 2022.

Joey Gallo was the starting RF and Gold Glove Award winner for Texas in 2020.  Gallo was playing in his 6th season with the Rangers.  In 57 games, Gallo hit for a .181 AVG, with 10 HR, 26 RBI’s, and two SB.  Gallo played part of the 2021 season in Texas before being traded to the New York Yankees before the trade deadline.

Willie Calhoun was the primary DH for Texas in 2020.  Calhoun was playing in his 4th season with the Rangers.  In 29 games, Calhoun hit for a .190 AVG, with one HR and 13 RBI’s.  In 2022, Calhoun will be entering his 6th season playing with Texas.

2020 Texas Rangers Bench

Shin-Soo Choo split his time between the OF and DH for Texas in 2020.  It was in his 7th and final season with the Rangers.  In 33 games, Choo hit for a .236 AVG, with five HR, 15 RBI’s, and six SB.  Choo moved back to Korea to play in 2021.  Choo is a current member of the SSG Landers of the KBO.

Todd Frazier split his 2020 season between 1B and 3B with Texas.  In 31 games, Frazier hit for a .241 AVG, with two HR, seven RBI’s, and one SB.  Frazier was traded back to the New York Mets before the rosters expanded in September.  Frazier played 13 games with Pittsburgh in 2021.  Frazier is currently a free agent.

Jose Trevino split catching duties with Jeff Mathis during the 2020 season.  Trevino was in his 3rd season in Texas.  In 24 games, Trevino hit for a .250 AVG, with two HR and nine RBI’s.  Trevino is entering his 5th season with the Rangers in 2022.

Anderson Tejeda was a rookie utility infielder in 2020.  In 23 games, Tejeda hit for a .253 AVG, with three HR, eight RBI’s, and four SB.  Tejeda played five games for Texas in 2021 and was granted free agency in November.  In 2022, Tejeda will be a member of the St. Louis Cardinals organization.

Derek Dietrich was a utility player for Texas in 2020.  In 25 games, Dietrich hit for a .197 AVG, with five HR, eight RBI’s, and one SB.  Dietrich played AAA in the New York Yankees and Washington organizations in 2021.  Dietrich is currently a free agent.
