Boy, that escalated quickly. “That”, of course, being the Texas Rangers’ decision to part ways with manager Chris Woodward on Monday and replacing him with beloved coach Tony Beasley.

Beasley will serve as the interim manager for the remainder of the 2022 season as the Rangers gear up for what should be a thorough search for the next manager of the ballclub heading into an all-important 2023 season: one in which the Rangers expect to contend for real.

Jon Daniels and Chris Young have made it clear: they want results and hope the next manager helps bring them said results.

Here are four candidates the Texas Rangers should consider in their search to find the next manager

1. Tony Beasley

Tony Beasley already knows the Texas Rangers and the players love him

Why not stick to what you know?

Tony Beasley is beloved by players and executives alike in the Texas Rangers organization. A baseball lifer and cancer survivor, he commands both respect and admiration from everyone he encounters. And he won his first game as interim skipper!

The former third base coach is a baseball lifer, and he’s finally getting his chance to prove that he can lead a group of men on the field. It’s not much different than the opportunity Ron Washington received here once upon a time.

Beasley has the upper-hand in this search just by way of serving as interim manager over these last 48 games of the season. If he can rally the troops and deliver positive results in the win column the rest of the way, he could position himself to become more than just interim manager.

2. Michael Young

Michael Young works in the Texas Rangers front office, could he transition to a managerial role?

Always a great leader on the field and setting the tone during his playing days, Michael Young could be a strong candidate to become the next manager of the Texas Rangers.

Young is popular with the fans and the organization clearly likes having him around, seeing as he now occupies a front office role with the Rangers. That also would seem to indicate that Young still wants to have a presence in the game of baseball.

However, Young has also made it abundantly clear in the past that managing doesn’t interest him in the slightest, citing family time as a reason to remain in his current role instead of getting back to the everyday grind that comes with being a manager.

Still, these are different circumstances, and with a team on the rise, perhaps this is the right time for Young to reconsider the prospect of becoming an MLB manager, and specifically of the Texas Rangers.

3. Bruce Bochy

Could Bruce Bochy be lured out of retirement to manage the Texas Rangers?

Bochy, if available, would be a dream hire for the Rangers. A three-time World Champion with the San Francisco Giants (including one coming at the expense of Texas back in 2010…), Bochy has a track record of turning around the fortunes of previously moribund franchises.

The 67-year-old Bochy has a wealth of MLB managing experience, having compiled over 4000 games and winning over 2000 of them. It’s hard to have that kind of longevity as a manager, let alone the fact that he’s also a proven winner. That combination could be hard for Chris Young and Jon Daniels to pass up, if Bochy decides to unretire.

Bochy took the San Diego Padres to the World Series in 1998 for just the second time in their history and the Giants to the World Series three times in five years after seasons upon seasons of mediocrity. There’s no doubt he could be trusted to guide a rising Texas Rangers team back to prominence should he want the chance.

4. Matt Quatraro

The Tampa Bay Rays’ bench coach has seen winning first-hand, which would be an asset to the Texas Rangers

There’s a reason Matt Quatraro’s name has appeared on nearly every team’s list when undertaking a managerial search: he knows what it takes to win.

Having been Rays’ manager Kevin Cash’s top lieutenant, he understands how successful organizations operate and having been a former minor league catcher himself, Quatraro knows ball.

Other Rays coaches have gone on to become MLB managers, including Rocco Baldelli (Twins) and formerly Charlie Montoyo of the Blue Jays, and executives in baseball believe it’s a matter of time before Quatraro lands a gig of his own. Quatraro has been called “intelligent, observant and organized” and “a good leader”, all attributes that surely stick out to someone like Chris Young, who appears to be all of those things himself in the Texas Rangers front office.

Quatraro wouldn’t be the “sexiest” hire the Rangers could make to be their next manager, but he would a really smart one and quite honestly, fits Chris Young’s mold the best.
