This may not be a super popular opinion among the fanbase right now, given the Rangers' offensive struggles so far this year, but maybe that's why this is an important conversation to have.
It takes time to get your legs from under you and it's no more important to remember with players that have recenlty joined a new organization, like these three we are about to talk about. It hasn't started the way anyone hoped it would, as they are navigating their own struggles.
To be clear, we aren't saying they've earned it but noting that the fans should try to be a tiny bit more patient with them right now.
Rangers' fans need to give these 3 players a little more latitude
Jake Burger
The big first baseman got off to a rough start but you know what? He took his medicine like a big boy and accepted his "reset" demotion to Triple-A where mashed for six games while he was there has come back a better hitter in the last three weeks.
He still needs to cut down on the strike outs and have better plate discipline on off-speed pitches away, but he is starting a new chapter in a new uniform and with patience and support from the fans, can return to being his old self again.
Kyle Higashioka
Higashioka has a -0.2 WAR through the first two months of the season, but shouldn't be judged on what he hasn't done just yet. The Rangers signed him to be a ready and steady backup for Jonah Heim.
It's important to give the new backstop some more time to adjust to a new staff and, more importantly, be prepared to be the everyday catcher should Heim get hurt. His .212 average is right on his career mark, and he has already shown a savvy with the Rangers' three aces. Give Higgy the benefit of the doubt until he has a reasonable sample size to judge.
Joc Pederson
This one won't be popular at all, given the fact that he is currently on the IL with a right-hand fracture and was awful before he got hurt. Still, the bottom line is that if the Rangers want to contend this year, they are going to need more pop from the left side of the plate than the oft-injured Corey Seager.
Unless the Rangers continue to struggle and become sellers ahead of the trade deadline, fans should not only get used to having Pederson back when healthy, but also show patience as he heals and cheer for him to progress to the mean that is on the back of his baseball card. Patience is a virtue and Joc needs ours through this extremely rough first half.
