The NFL draft is here and that is a good reminder that the MLB draft is coming up. The question for the Rangers is, who will be the pick at 12?

Every year there are a new group of prospects joining the organization through the draft. The Rangers hold the 12th overall pick this year and are looking to add a great prospect this year.

After filling in some weaker areas in last years draft, the Rangers are free to take whoever they want with their first selection this year.

Keeping in mind Chris Young's tendencies, let's look ahead and spotlight some guys who can be the pick for the Rangers this year.

5 draft options for the Texas Rangers #12 pick in this summers MLB Draft

Jace Laviolette

The Texas A&M standout is currently plummeting in draft boards, much to the delight of Rangers' fans, there is a real chance he is there when it's time for Texas to pick at 12.

Laviolette is a highly-touted prospect that has not had the season he dreamed of, but he and the Aggies are heating up at the right time and he's been on absolute tear recently, especially in the past week.

The outfielder has 15 home runs currently in 2025 and 29 last season, there is real power in his bat. There were real questions into who was better last year between him and Braden Montgomery in that outfield.

This is a no brainer pick if he is there. He shouldn't fall this far, but he does have the ability to return to A&M in hopes of a better season next year. It might be a miracle if he is there. With a lack of slugging outfielders prospering in the system, Chris Young would sprint this pick to the podium.

Kayson Cunningham

Young doesn't have a history of selecting high schoolers early in the draft but Cunningham may be the first. He is a Texas product committed to the University of Texas that can be the pick.

As one of the top recruits in the nation and highest rated in Texas, there is a lot of first-round buzz surrounding him. Despite only being listed as 5-foot-10, 178 pounds, there have already been exit velocities recorded at 106 mph.

He is an incredible athlete with a high level pedigree. He can likely be developed wherever the Rangers desire as well. Players currently in the system shouldn't stop a team from going for best player available.

This would be out of the norm but if there was ever a player to break the mold, I think Cunningham is the guy. The main question is if he will be there or not.

Alex Lodise

Following a very mellow 2024 season anchoring down shortstop for Florida State, Lodise has exploded onto the scene this year. He has been nominated as the midseason ACC Player of the Year in a lot of places as well.

Lodise is a standout defender with great bat-to-ball skills and plus power for the position. There aren't many holes in his game and makes one hero play a game defensively.

While Seager and Walcott may have shortstop anchored down for the future, Lodise can allow the team flexibility. He has a strong enough arm, range, and athleticism to truly play anywhere on the field.

This would be taking a page out of the Padres playbook in taking a shortstop knowing one of the shortstops in the system will change positions. It worked with Jackson Merrill and can work here.

Lodise will likely be a little underslot at the 12th picks value and can be a major piece for our system.

Cam Cannarella

One of the most polished college prospects has to be on Chris Young's mind at 12. Cannarella is an incredible player with a great bat and incredible defense.

A 60 grade fielder and runner displays his incredible athleticism in center field followed by his 55 grade bat. Once in a system, the power will likely increase, but has also showcased itself in college.

Chris Young has shown he loves polished college players. After playing essentially all of 2024 on a torn labrum, offseason surgery has lead to a dip in numbers in 2025. Even after injury and recovery, he still has fantastic numbers in the ACC.

The reputation surrounding Cannarella will either take him the Vance Honeycutt route or he will sign right around slot value. He will be a first round pick at some point but there may need to be some convinving for that to be 2025.

It wouldn't shock me if Cannarella went back to college. If he doesn't return to college, I would love for Cannarella to play his career out in Arlington.

Tyler Bremner

Bremner is basically the Laviolette of pitching. Competing with Jamie Arnold for 1-A and 1-B for pitchers rankings prior to this season, Bremner is also falling a bit.

The talent is there. He already has two 65 grade pitches in his changeup and fastball with solid control to go along with that. His stats have slipped this year. That is a problem but the stuff is undeniable.

This is a loaded draft class that may cause the top right hander to fall some picks and be available. A dip in stats against weaker competition will make it more realistic for the Rangers to have a chance at Bremner.

Young has shown he isn't afraid to make bold decisions on college pitchers with picking Kumar Rocker and while not being as bold as that selection, Bremner is certainly in play.
