The Rangers received some bad news as they prepare to kick off the second half of the season. Jake Burger is hurt again, meaning another stint on the 10-day injured list. He will be eligible to return on July 23 after jamming his left quad running out a grounder just a few games before the All-Star Break.
What's even more concerning is the word out of Arlington is that the organization currently isn't sure how they will replace the first baseman.
Rangers don't have a plan to replace the injured Jake Burger
From a production standpoint, losing Burger for the first few weeks of the second half shouldn't be what worries Ranger fans. He is underperforming so far this season, hitting just .228 with 11 homers and 35 RBI. He has also fanned an alarming 73 times in just 272 at-bats while playing an average first base.
The problem lies in that the team will have to bend over backwards to replace him yet again. The available options on the current roster include some sort of platoon with Josh Smith and Ezekiel Duran.
Both utility jacks of all trades have manned first base at some point this season. They have also played third base. So if the Rangers opt not to call up a direct replacement, we will be seeing a lot more of Duran soon at third, as Smith has flashed better leather in his time at first.
Will the Rangers recall Josh Jung or Blaine Crim?
There are several more options to replace Burger when you look at the 40-man roster. Blaine Crim could be recalled, or Josh Jung could also go back to third, allowing Smith to play first.
Justin Foscue can also play first in a pinch.
The most intriguing move might be making room on the roster for the newly-signed Rowdy Tellez, whom the Rangers acquired several weeks ago on a minor league deal. He has a proven track record with the Seattle Mariners.
So, there are several options available, though none sound utterly appealing.
