MLB has seen a plethora of "fairy-tale endings" throughout its illustrious history, but not every veteran receives the opportunity to ride off into the sunset with a club that helped them build a formidable career.
Starting pitcher Max Scherzer is on the market this offseason. While the Texas Rangers may attempt to keep him in Arlington, a recent Bleacher Report article predicted that he would reunite with the Detroit Tigers and play for the franchise that saw him become a force to be reckoned with on the bump.
Bleacher Report listed the top 10 landing spots for the 40-year-old ace, and even though the Rangers were fifth, Detroit was ultimately placed in the top slot. After making a Cinderella run the ALDS, many fans and pundits feel that the Tigers are ready to make key additions and use 2025 as a chance to grow into their newfound contender status.
"Is it wishful thinking to imagine Scherzer making a return to where he first blossomed into a star? Maybe," Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller wrote.
"But there's no question that the Tigers need rotation help after a seven-game postseason run in which Skubal started three games, Olson started one and they used an opener for the remainder."
Bleacher Report lists AL Central foe as number one landing spot for Max Scherzer
Scherzer spent five years with the Tigers and was a critical part of some truly talented teams. During his time in the Motor City, the righty went 82-35 with a 3.52 ERA. Additionally, he was a member of the 2012 squad that won the AL pennant but fell short to the San Francisco Giants in the World Series.
In many ways, the Tigers were the first team to see who Scherzer could be at his best. The St. Louis native has won two championships since departing Detroit, and there may still be a sense of unfinished business in play.
It is not known if Texas is open to keeping Scherzer, or if they are even financially gutsy enough to do so. With the franchise expected to try to remain under the luxury threshold, it is possible that the three-time Cy Young Award winner will go elsewhere and potentially receive a fairy-tale ending to what has been a storied career.
