It's no surprise that now that the Texas Rangers' season is effectively over, questions about whether Bruce Bochy will return in 2026 are swirling around the club.
At the moment, there isn't anything to do but read the tea leaves. However, the skipper's latest comments certainly don't bode well. Turning 70 years old, Bochy is almost certainly towards the end of his career. However, he could have at least two more years in him.
Texas Rangers manager situation gets murkier after Bochy’s cryptic comments
However, his comments ahead of the last three Rangers games of the season sure sound like someone who thinks he's on his way out.
"Season's not over. It's something we'll talk about when the season's over," Bochy said before Thursday's home finale against Minnesota. "So I'm going to stick with that right now and see if we can win a couple of games here."
That doesn't sound like someone who believes he'll be back for another year. It doesn't really sound like a person who wants to be back all that badly. And considering the finish to the year, a total collapse in the last week and a half after getting within two games of the playoffs, there's some question whether he should be back.
Bochy and Chris Young, the team's president of baseball operations, said they will talk about next season after this one is done. The Rangers, who will miss the playoffs for the second year in a row since that championship in 2023, finish with three games at Cleveland this weekend.
"The two of us will sit down and talk about where things are, what happened this year, where we're going," Young said. "There's things that I'm sure he's going to want to know about the future of the team and we'll talk about it, like we did three years ago, and figure it out."
It's a safe bet that the Texas Rangers and Bruce Bochy will go their separate ways once those conversations are complete.
