The Texas Rangers have a lot of work to do this offseason, and not a lot of resources to get the job done. The club also has an edict from president of baseball operations, Chris Young: get younger, more athletic, and more dynamic.

Perhaps no player on the roster fits that bill better than Cameron Cauley. At 23 years old, the 2021 third-round pick is young. With an average sprint speed of 30.5 feet per second, he's a 100th percentile runner, and that certainly is a great showcase for his athleticism. His .276/.366/.470 line with 16 homers and 39 steals over 93 games at Round Rock certainly classifies as a dynamic type of performance.

It seems, then, that Cauley is poised to check all of the boxes. The only thing is that when he got a big league opportunity in 2026, he didn't impress, hitting just .207/.281/.345. Of course, it should be noted that he also logged just 65 plate appearances over 34 games, oftentimes serving as a pinch runner and/or defensive replacement.

Cam Cauley should get a lot of opportunities for the Rangers in 2027, and he needs to step up

The Rangers have a need at second base. While the team could plug Ezequiel Duran there full-time next season, it would be cutting off its nose to spite its face by losing the value his versatility brings. Justin Foscue is another option at the keystone. While he's a developmental win for Texas, he could also be in line for time at first base and DH, especially if the latter is vacated by Joc Pederson this winter.

On top of that, the Rangers could really use a platoon partner, and if we're being honest, a potential replacement for Evan Carter in center field. The club can no longer afford to have him post an OPS in the .300-range against lefties and, in order to preserve Wyatt Langford's health, needs a different right-handed option to play center.

On paper, Cauley is the perfect option. He can fill both roles, as well as play some shortstop if needed. Versatility, even with Duran on the roster, is never a bad thing. If he can manage to fill these roles, Texas can redirect some money this offseason toward other needs, particularly those in the bullpen.

The small sample and disjointed nature of Cauley's playing time make it impossible to truly judge him based on what we saw last season. That makes it difficult to fully trust him heading into spring training, but the Rangers may not have another choice. Therefore, of all the young players Texas could have playing roles in 2027, he might be the most important.
