Once the world starts to heat up in late May, so does the college baseball landscape beginning with the regional round of the NCAA tournament.
The Rangers, who have the 12th pick in July's MLB Draft this year, and their fans will certainly have their eyes on this weekend's regioanl round to see the potential college talent the team could end up with.
Despite being linked to high school prospects this year, President of Baseball Operations Chris Young's track record trends toward college level talent. This means paying attention to college players when they face the top of top in regional play.
3 NCAA baseball Regional Tournaments with best prospect rich draft targets for the Rangers
Austin Regional
This will likely be the most watched regional by Rangers fans by default and there is good reason for that. The talent in Austin will be extremely high between Texas, Kansas State, UTSA and Houston Christian.
Texas comes into the regional as the second best team in the nation and their team is loaded with talented players like Luke Harrison, Kimble Schuessler and Ryan Galvan leading the way.
The talent doesn't just stop there. UTSA has six batters hitting .300+ with multiple having more walks than strikeouts. Kansas State is lead by Maximus Martin, Keegan O'Connor and Seth Dardar who pass the name test and have raked all year.
These Texas teams can put up some serious numbers and Kansas State is no slouch either. If you want to see some high talent offenses duke it out and make the scorekeepers day miserable, this is the regional to watch.
Players to watch:
- Texas: Luke Harrison, Kimble Schuessler
- Kansas State: Seth Dardar, Maximus Martin
Knoxville Regional
This has arguably the most early in the draft talent out of all the regionals being played. Wake Forest and Tennessee could combine for potentially five or six first round picks alone.
If you haven't had the pleasure of watching Liam Doyle of Tennessee blow fastballs past everyone he sees, now is the time. Him and Wake Forest's shortstop, Marek Houston could easily be the picks for Chris Young, 12th overall.
Young picked Tennessee outfielder, Dylan Dreiling last year and likely will have an eye on every game played in this series. The three and four seeds, Cincinnati and Miami-Ohio, have also produced players such as Sam Bachman, Josh Harrison and Kevin Youkilis.
The offense is paramount on every team. Every team here has a bat that will be drafted in the top three rounds potentially. This will be a heavily competitive regional full of great games and great MLB talent with two major players to look for with the twelth overall pick.
Players to watch:
- Tennessee: Liam Doyle, Andrew Fischer and Gavin Klien
- Wake Forest: Ethan Conrad, Marek Houston
Tallahassee Regional
This regional is one of the most difficult to win. The pitching is highlighted by Jamie Arnold, Pico Kohn and Northeastern's entire staff that is the best in college baseball.
It might be a dream that Arnold is still there at 12 but crazier things have happened. Florida State has likely four bats that will likely go in rounds two to four that the Rangers will be anxious to pick from based on his past draft patterns in Max Williams, Alex Lodise and Gage Harrelson.
Northeastern is incredibly dangerous team on a 27-game win streak with an incredible pitching staff. It is hard to outline who headlines their pitching staff because every pitcher with 15+ innings has an ERA below 3.20.
Mississippi State also boasts a top tier pitcher in Kohn who fits the Rangers' mold of tested college arms. The Bulldogs also have countless guys that can hit homers, highlighted by draft elgible bats Bryce Chance and Noah Sullivan.
This regional has everything to look for with every team seemingly having multiple high-value players. The Texas Rangers front office will be doing their due diligence as should fans.
Players to watch:
- Florida State: Jamie Arnold and Alex Lodise
- Northeastern: Will Jones and Cam Maldonaldo
- Mississippi State: Pico Kohn and Noah Sullivan
