There have always been hot takes woven throughout the world of sports but this latest one from a Dallas sports columnist might take the cake as far as the Texas Rangers are concerned.

Mac Engel, a sports columnist for the Fort Worth Star Telegram, hinted at a potential Corey Seager to the New York Yankees trade and how it just might make some sense.

Of course, this would be on par with other DFW pro sport's teams with the trades of Luka Doncic from the Mavericks to Lakers this past NBA season and Micah Parsons from the Cowboys to division rival Green Bay Packers.

Rangers would basically be starting over trading Corey Seager

In a minute, we will address the fact that the Yankees don't have candidates worthy of attracting the Rangers of trading away for Seager. First, let's chat about what it would do to Texas in the future.

It is easy to admit that the last two seasons for the Rangers hasn't necessarily been what the organization or fanbase hoped for, Segaer was far from the problem. Sure a lot of people will point to his injury history as a potential justification but that is more of an argument of moving the 31-year-old to a less strenuous defensive position.

The Rangers are a better team with Seager in the lineup, even with a down year on offense in 2025. Engel notes that the Rangers 28-year-old utility man Josh Smith has the skills to be an everyday shortstop for Texas.

"He's not at Seager's level, but you don't have to bury him in the ninth spot of the order because he's an embarassment to hitting," Engel said. Unsure how other people take that sentence but that to me doesn't seem worthy of replacing a two-time World Series MVP when it's not necessary.

Texas needs to focus on other reinforcements. Adding a catcher, maybe even a stronger DH, first baseman and replacing Adolis Garcia in right field. If Seager ended up being traded it would just add another empty slot that isn't fillable by Smith, Ezequiel Duran or other Rangers' minor leaguer.

Yankees don't have a trade package worthy of Corey Seager

In the piece, Engel says that there needs to be serious discussion about a Seager trade if the shortstop could "potentially net two bats and a pitcher."

What makes me curious is what Engel believes Texas could get from New York. He just addresses the Yankees' willingness to always go big for superstars and the upsetting play of their 24-year-old shortstop Anthony Volpe.

I think if Texas was even close to having a serious discussion with the Yankees about Seager, the conversation would start with Major League Baseball's 86th overall prospect in outfielder Spencer Jones. As for other options, Texas could inquire about the Yankees 2025 third-round pick and Texas A&M Aggie Kaeden Kent.

Outside of that, the prospect list is a bit short for the Rangers to go after. And if you look at the team's big league roster, there doesn't seem to much of interest to Texas.

Engel does end by saying trading Seager "is not a desperate situation" but "if someone calls, they need to listen."
