It shouldn't be a surprise given payroll uncertainties next season that despite a lack of motivation from the Texas Rangers to part ways with Corey Seager, MLB teams continue to express interest in the two-time World Series MVP.
The latest team to do so is the Boston Red Sox, who reportedly have engaged in discussions with Texas about acquiring Seager. While Boston and other teams are interested, those conversations haven't gone beyond surface level.
Rangers aren't trading Seager but would be doing a disservice to not field calls
Honestly, getting calls about players, especially during the offseason is a pretty common procedure and those discussions are bound to ramp up a bit more once all 30 front offices are in the same area like they are this week in Orlando at the Winter Meetings.
It's also well known that the Rangers are attempting to cut payroll after I missing the playoffs for two straight seasons and keep from paying luxury tax penalties, which they have done the past few seasons. This led to Texas parting ways with high arbitration earners Adolis Garcia and Jonah Heim, while trading Marcus Semien's $25 million annual salary.
At the same time, Texas isn't calling UNCLE either, and is very much motivated to be in playoff contention next year. If they are being honest about that, trading the 31-year-old Seager would not be ideal.
All of this being said, it is beneficially to at least hear what is on the table for the Rangers of they were to part ways with Seager. Boston is also one of organization with highly touted young players like Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony and three of MLB Pipeline's Top 100 prospects.
