Do the Rangers need to take another stab at this position at the deadline?

Jake Burger’s slow start raised questions about the team's future at first base, but his recent hot streak suggests he's finally cooking. Is it enough to keep the Rangers from shopping at the trade deadline?

When the Texas Rangers acquired Jake Burger from the Miami Marlins in December, they anticipated a hearty addition to their lineup—a seasoned slugger ready to deliver power from the corner infield spot.

And they seemed to be getting that during spring training, even despite his decent batting average, he still hit three homers and drove in nine runs while showing off his defense.

However, early in the season it's been more sizzle than substance for Burger, leading to questions about whether the Rangers would need to seek a new first baseman at the trade deadline.

Burger's early-season performance has left a lot of fans unhappy

In his first 30 games, he batted a mere .190, with three home runs and 12 RBIs. This led to his demotion to Triple-A Round Rock on May 2, as the Rangers sought to find the right recipe for success at first base and potentially help Burger get his mind right.

While in Triple-A, Burger went ballistic hitting .391 with a pair of homers and a 1.158 OPS in just 29 at-bats with the Express. Texas saw all they needed to see and quickly got him back to Arlington 10 days later.

Since his recall, Burger has been one of the best hitters on the team. Over his last 15 games, he's posted a .296 batting average with three home runs and seven RBIs. That was capped off with a two homer performance on Wednesday against the Yankees in the Bronx. He finally started demonstrating the reason Texas traded for him over the winter to be--a significant offensive contributor.

Has Burger done enough to stave off being replaced?

While the Rangers initially faced challenges with Burger's performance, his recent turnaround suggests that he may yet fulfill the role envisioned for him. As the trade deadline approaches, the Rangers will weigh his current trajectory against potential alternatives.

They are also in a weird spot being one game under .500 and just a few game shy of first place in the AL West. But they also have shown no signs of improving as a team offensively and lately the bullpen has started to fall back down to earth.

If they felt the need to replace him, but wanted to stick to internal moves they could recall Blaine Crim and actually give him a fair shot this time around. If they need immediate impact, they could try and grab a first basemen off the trade market, notably the Giants' Wilmer Flores or the Nationals' Josh Bell.

With his team friendly deal and his improved play and personal resilience offer a compelling case for patience.
