Brandon Nimmo needed some assurances from the Texas Rangers before he would agree to waive his full no-trade clause and come to Arlington in a swap for Marcus Semien.
Nimmo, 32, has played his entire career with the New York Mets and wasn't looking to be part of a rebuilding project. He turned to his former former teammate and Rangers' ace Jacob deGrom to get some advice that eventually convinced the the outfielder to make the move.
Nimmo consulted with deGrom before waiving his no trade clause
Nimmo spent four seasons as deGrom's teammate in Queens and the two are still good friends. He needed to hear from the right-hander that he was coming into a situation where the organization was committed to competing for a championship - not just this year, but in the foreseeable future.
He spoke with deGrom who gave him a glowing review of his current team.
“[deGrom] has nothing but amazing things to say about the Rangers...He's been on both sides, and he has absolutely thrived in this environment. He thinks that we are capable of winning a World Series. …We're not in a rebuild mode. We're going for it," Nimmo told reporters following the trade. "This next season is a very exciting time for the Texas Rangers. I would not have waived the no-trade clause if I did not think that I could come here and be a part of chasing that World Series.”
Rangers President of Baseball Operations Chris Young told him the same thing, but it carries more weight coming from a current player like deGrom, who is further removed from the monetary aspect of the deal and has a history with Nimmo both on and off the field.
Nimmo is going to add a power left-handed bat to middle of the lineup
With questions surrounding Joc Pederson and Corey Seager's propensity for injury, Nimmo gives the Rangers another power lefty bat to plug-and-play at the leadoff spot in the order.
Though assumed to be the Rangers' right fielder, there is a chance that he could be moved to left as Wyatt Langford becomes the everyday replacement for the non-tendered Adolis Garcia, who was a Gold Glove caliber defender in his time with the team.
