With most of the talk concerning the starting rotation surrounds Jacob deGrom Nathan Eovaldi, new acquisition MacKenzie Gore and Jack Leiter, Kumar Rocker has been quietly going about his business to secure the fifth spot in the rotation.
In his final outing in Surprise, he locked down the last spot over Jacob Latz with a solid start where he was able to get his nasty change-up going, resulting in lots of swings and misses and five strikeouts.
As he makes his first start on Saturday against the Cincinnati Reds, Skip Schumaker will be looking closely to see what kind of improvement the hard-throwing righty has made.
Rangers have invested a lot of time in getting Rocker ready
Drafted in the 2022 June amateur draft with the 3rd overall pick, the Rangers definitely envisioned Rocker being a future starter and potential cornerstone of the organization for the next decade or so.
Now that good friend and college teammate Jack Leiter is seemingly in the process of taking the next step in becoming a dominant MLB pitcher, you have to think that Rocker is feeling even a little more pressure to see some good results early in the 2026 season.
It's important that Rocker not feel the pressure
Globe Life Park will be rocking tomorrow as Ranger fans welcome their team home from an impressive 4-2 road trip against the Phillies and Orioles to start the season.
It will be key that, as Rocker hits a crossroads early in his career, he does not let the energy take him out of his rhythm. The Watkinsville, Georgia native will definitely have the juices flowing, but his slow and deliberate style will be key to settling in early and using his full arsenal of pitches.
If he can locate that changeup and get it going with his 96 mph heater, we have seen how he can dominate hitters and work his way through an order. If he can get a quality outing and look good in the process, it will go a long way to boosting the organization's confidence in what has been a bumpy start to his career as a Rangers.
He is on the shortest leash of all of the starters and a solid first start will entrench him and make the Rangers' brass confident that they made the right decision.
