Marcus Semien's opening weekend with Mets showed exactly why Rangers traded him

It's early in the season, but Semien still probably wishes he could've had a better start to the year with his new team.

The Texas Rangers traded second baseman Marcus Semien to the New York Mets for outfielder Brandon Nimmo during the offseason to improve their offense. Thus far in the young season, both Semien and Nimmo have shown why the Rangers made the shocking trade.

Nimmo had a strong start to the season during the Rangers' opening series against the Philadelphia Phillies, posting a .333/.429/.583 slash line with a home run across the three games.

As for Semien, the second baseman had a rough start to the season with his new club.

Marcus Semien's rough opening weekend with Mets showed exactly why Rangers traded him

The Mets have a 2-1 record after their three-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but not because of Semien. The former Rangers second baseman went 2-for-11 with a hit-by-pitch during the Mets' first series of the season, and he can thank Pirates center fielder Oneil Cruz for one of his two hits.

The Mets wanted to improve defensively by acquiring Semien, which should happen, at least at the second base position. The Rangers decided to trade for Nimmo, a slightly below-average defender but a better hitter than Semien, to improve their offense. Thus far, it appears the trade is heading toward working out for Texas.

Semien is undoubtedly a valuable player because of his strong defense at second base. In 2023, he led the American League in bWAR (7.7) while slashing .276/.348/.478 (126 OPS+). His OPS+ dropped to 103 in 2024 and 97 in 2025, yet he still posted 4.1 and 3.3 bWAR, respectively.

While Semien was a valuable player the last two seasons despite his offensive regression, the Rangers desperately needed to improve offensively during the offseason. Trading Semien for Nimmo, who had been an above-average hitter each season dating back to 2017, was the right move for the Rangers.

The Mets have only played three games, so it's unfair to say Semien will undoubtedly have a below-average season at the plate. Regardless of sample size, New York's first series of the season showed why the Rangers traded him. And Nimmo's strong performance showed why the Rangers traded for the outfielder. We'll still be rooting for Semien to bounce back at the plate, but we obviously hope Nimmo does even better.

Nimmo will be back in action when the Rangers take on the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards at 5:35 CST tonight. The game will be available to stream on Rangers Sports Network.
