Brewers sign former Rangers journeyman pitcher Gerson Garabito to minor league contract

The Brewers have signed former Rangers righty Gerson Garabito to a minor league deal with a non-roster invitation to big league camp, according to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy.

Garabito, 30, made his MLB debut with the Rangers in 2024. Across 18 outings (two starts) in his rookie season, Garabito posted a 4.78 ERA (5.29 FIP) with 22 strikeouts and 12 walks in 26 1/3 innings. That year, the Rangers optioned him to Triple-A Round Rock five times.

He was also optioned to Triple-A three times in 2025 before being released in mid-June. He made just three appearances for Texas this past season, allowing eight earned runs on 15 hits and one walk while collecting eight strikeouts across eight innings.

Upon being released by the Rangers, Garabito signed with the Samsung Lions of the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO), where he managed a 2.64 ERA with 84 strikeouts and 37 walks in 78 1/3 innings over 15 starts. Garabito decided he'd rather have another shot at the big leagues rather than remain in the KBO, where he had success.

By signing Garabito, the Brewers get a righty who relies on five pitches; he throws a low-80s curveball (24%), high-80s slider (22.3%), low-90s four-seamer (20.7%) and sinker (17.4%) and mid-80s changeup (15.7%).

The Garabito signing is similar to the Brewers' acquisition of journeyman righty Trevor Megill from the Minnesota Twins in 2023. Megill was in his late 20s and hadn't had much success at the big-league level, and it appeared he may not have what it takes to remain in the majors. However, he became Milwaukee's closer, posting a 2.88 ERA in 128 innings over the past three seasons with the Brewers.

The Kansas City Royals signed Garabito out of the Dominican Republic on Sept 17, 2012. He reached as high as Double-A with Kansas City before electing free agency in the 2020-21 offseason. Then, he signed a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants.

Garabito reached Triple-A with San Francisco before electing free agency after the 2021 season. He spent the following two seasons playing in Venezuela and the Dominican Republic before signing with Texas.
