The Texas Rangers are 4-0 in the 2023 playoffs. They swept the Tampa Bay Rays in a Wild Card Series and have taken the first two from the Orioles in Baltimore. For Rangers fans, this is a sign of relief. The Rangers hit a skid toward the end of the regular season. For a moment, it seemed they may not make the playoffs at all. What changed? An injection of late-90s alternative rock, that's what! Rangers' broadcaster Jared Sandler first announced the presence of Creed on Twitter. Then Matt Hicks did this in his call of Mitch Garvers' grand slam,
Creed is firing players up in 2023! My middle school self would be... more pumped than I would like to admit. Creed was gigantic when I was younger. Hits like Higher and With Arms Wide Open were impossible to escape. My Sacrifice, the band's 2003 hit, was used ad naseam on WWE programming. The WWE understood the invigorating powers of vaguely Christian alt-rock!
At first, I thought the Creed news may blow over. It seemed more like a funny anecdote than a story. I was mistaken. Today, something that first appeared like it would be a joke among Rangers fans turned into a happening. My Red Sox lovin' umpire brother even texted me about it. Creed has become a part of the 2023 Rangers' playoff story. Bruce Bochy was asked about it today. Three-time World Series winner Bruce Bochy! He was asked about a band that was so popular in the year 2000 that one of their songs was used in the trailer for Titan AE despite not featuring in the movie!
When we fans look back on the 2023 season, we will remember a lot. We will remember Jonah mocking replay reviews. We will remember scores of home runs. Though we may not want to, we will remember our bullpen. Hopefully, we will remember a World Series win. No matter what, we will remember Creed, lifting our boys in the last half of the year, and we will embrace it With Arms Wide Open.
