Rangers reportedly scouting Cubs creates intriguing trade deadline speculation
Despite the Rangers having probably the worst start you could imagine after winning the World Series just a year prior, the offense has finally showed up the last week. This gives dangerous hope to this squad and its fans. However it is definitely more fun to believe in better things to come than to think your team is done.
Everyone knows that Texas has all the talent they need to return to the postseason. They have been met with a ton of injuries and frequent under-performance. This has led to the decline of what was such an amazing offense. The unit's mediocre performance this year has been killer.
All this said, it is intriguing to see that the Rangers had scouts at a Chicago Cubs game recently. Chicago is in the same boat as the Rangers, except with less hope due to other teams stomping all over them on a consistent basis. Seeing the Rangers go scout a team that clearly wants to sell is eye-opening in regard to what GM Chris Young wants.
Chicago has a lot of talented pieces such as outfielders Ian Happ, Cody Bellinger and Seiya Suzuki, along with bullpen arms like Ben Brown, Hector Neris, and others.
It will take a lot for Texas to gain enough ground to even consider the idea of buying, but they're certainly not out of the race. They currently sit 5.5 games behind the Mariners in the AL West and seven out of the third wild card spot.
With some very winnable games in July, there is still a glimmer of hope that Texas can rebound, especially with the struggles at the top of their own division as the Mariners and Astros have failed to build a comfortable enough lead.
How will the Rangers respond these next few weeks? After such a big series sweep against Tampa, ideally you would like to see the momentum carry over during the next two series in Houston and Los Angeles. But only time will tell whether or not we see a better version of this team post trade deadline.
