It would be tough to find a team that had a tougher set of opponents for their first 40 games than the Texas Rangers. They've finally made it to the other side of that stretch, but does that still matter?
The team from Arlington has struggled out of the gate, and not all of it has been because of the opposition. From star players having slumps in their careers to their infielders literally running into each other, the Rangers' toughest opponent so far this season has honestly been themselves.
The short answer is that, yes, the season does still matter. We're just over a quarter of the way through the season, and the Rangers themselves believe that their best baseball is ahead of them. For now, trusting the process might be the way to go. Even if it might be painful.
Rangers don't think the season is done yet
While it might've felt as traumatizing as going to the dentist, the first quarter of the season for the Rangers wasn't really that bad. As it stands, the team is only 2.5 games from the top of the American League West. With the schedule they had, which featured teams with an average of a .529 winning percentage, they could've ended up in a much worse spot.
Even so, manager Skip Schumaker and the rest of the team know that they can be better.
"Skip had a message for the offense that was just like, ‘this is a tough stretch, and we are right in the hunt.'" Rangers third baseman Josh Jung said. "Hopefully it was a sigh of relief for everyone. We’re all trying to do too much. But we haven't played close to our best baseball, and we're right there, so everyone just relax and go play. Have fun. Don’t make it more than it is.”
Well, luckily for them, going out and having fun will get easier in the coming months. They'll get to face teams who have been struggling even more than they've been, who are sitting below .500. Although, they still have to be cautious and keep their guard up. David did kill Goliath, after all.
However you look at it, it's obvious that the Rangers haven't given up on their season just yet. So why should we?
