The Texas Rangers are anxiously awaiting the return of several important contributors they hope can push the team over the edge as the season gets ready to kick into full gear.
Here's an update of a handful of Rangers on the injured list and where they are in the recovery process.
Cody Bradford's rehab frustrations boil over
The left-hander is in a tough spot. After suffering an elbow injury and undergoing internal brace surgery early in the 2025 season, Bradford's recovery was running smoothly in spring and even made an early season rehab start with Triple-A Round Rock earlier this month on April 2.
Unfortunately, he experienced a setback with some soreness in his throwing elbow. That has practically sidelined him and according to Dallas Morning News' Evan Grant, Bradford hasn't thrown a baseball since. A former sixth-round pick out of Baylor, Bradford hasn't thrown in a big league game since September 2024.
Cody Freeman back to taking swings, eyeing build-up soon
Fans were encouraged to see the 2025 Rangers' Minor League Player of the Year in Freeman back to swinging in the cages last week. Suffering a stress fracture in his back prior to spring training kicking off, missing all of Cactus League.
In his first taste of MLB in 2025, Freeman played 114 games hitting .228 with three home runs, 15 RBIs, four doubles and 13 runs. He made a big impression with the organization as leader of a youth renaissance late in the year. He will need rehab games to get back into game shape and we can hint that those will start early in May.
Montgomery excited to make genuine progress in bullpen sessions
Another lefty in Texas recovering from Tommy John Surgery, Monty has been throwing in the bullpen over the last few weeks. It has been over a year since he underwent the surgery as he was about to embark on his second year with Arizona after exercising his $22.5 million player option.
It did not go well with the D-backs, recording an 8-7 record with a 6.23 ERA, 1.65 WHIP, a 1.9 K/BB ratio and 81 earned runs in 117 innings with the team in the Valley. Arizona finally cut their losses in July 2025 and he signed with Texas prior to spring this year. He's expected to return to the rotation after the All-Star break.
Where is Carter Baumler?
The 24-year-old Rule 5 Draft Pick took the baseball world's heart with his amazing journey to the big leagues and his unique call up to the big leagues this spring. The Iowa native made his debut on Opening Day and since has appeared in four games out of the Texas bullpen.
Unfortunately, he did suffer a right rib strain and was placed on the 15-Day IL on April 5. Good news though, because as of Thursday he was sent to begin a rehab assignment on Thursday which is the first step to returning back to a bullpen in need of a big assist.
