With all eyes on the MLB playoffs, roster moves from non-postseason teams are easy to miss. But don't worry, we've got you covered. In minor news, Texas Rangers utilityman Jonah Bride elected minor league free agency over the weekend. He was one of six known minor-league players to hit free agency over the past few days. Here are the others:
- Houston Astros RHP Jason Alexander
- Detroit Tigers RHP Tanner Rainey
- Chicago Cubs RHP Corbin Martin
- Cincinnati Reds OF Will Benson
- Kansas City Royals OF Drew Waters
The Rangers signed Bride, 30, to a minor-league deal over the offseason. Texas released him in mid-July, and he almost immediately signed another minor-league contract with the organization.
Jonah Bride had brief stint on Rangers' 26-man roster in 2026
Texas finally selected Bride's contract on Aug. 9. Two days later, the Rangers designated him for assignment. He cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Round Rock.
Bride went 1-for-5 with a walk and two strikeouts across two games with the Rangers this year. He posted strong numbers with the Express, slashing .279/.406/.410 with 10 home runs and 78 RBI over 124 games. He recorded innings at first base, third base, and left field in 2026.
The Oakland Athletics selected Bride in the 23rd round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of South Carolina. The 23rd round no longer exists in the MLB Draft.
Bride first reached the majors in 2018. He appeared in 98 games with the Athletics from 2022-23. He had a poor .528 OPS in his two seasons with the Athletics.
Oakland traded Bride to the Miami Marlins for cash in the 2023-24 offseason. He broke out in 2024, hitting .276/.357/.461 with 11 home runs and 39 RBI over 71 games.
Bride's numbers fell off in 2025. He hit just .100 over 12 games with the Marlins, who traded Bride to the Minnesota Twins mid-season. He had a rough .511 OPS over 33 games with Minnesota and spent much of the year in Triple-A. Bride elected free agency after the 2025 season, allowing him to sign his contract with the Rangers.
If the Rangers can bring Bride back on a minor-league deal, there's really no reason not to do it. However, given his limited opportunity in the majors with Texas this year, the utilityman may look to sign with an organization where he believes he could receive more MLB playing time.
Bride could also pursue an opportunity overseas. If he can sign with a KBO or NPB team, Bride could make more money than he would playing minor-league ball in the States.
