The Texas Rangers appear to have turned the page as an organization in a big way Friday by non-tendering several huge pieces of their World Series championship in 2023.
Right fielder Adolis Garcia and catcher Jonah Heim were among four Rangers to become free agents after the team did not offer contract extensions. Relief pitchers Josh Sborz and Jacob Webb were also non-tendered by the club.
All will become free agents available to the entire league.
The non-tenders of Garcia and Heim symbolize a new chapter for the Rangers
By non-tendering ALCS hero Adolis Garcia and veteran backstop Jonah Heim, Chris Young and the Rangers are making a clear statement that it is time to move on from the core group that won the organization's only World Series championship in 2023.
Garcia is coming off his worst season as a pro in 2025, where he hit just .227 with 19 homers and 75 RBIs. With his slash line of .227/.271/.394, it marked a career low and continued a downward trajectory from career highs in 2023.
Similarly, switch-hitting catcher Heim posted a statline that was his worst since his rookie season in 2021. Heim hit just .213 with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs - considerably worse than his breakout 2023 campaign in which he hit .258 with 18 dingers and 85 RBIs.
By non-tendering both Ranger stalwarts, it is clear that the organization is making an effort to get younger and embrace a new era as the team starts its first year with new manager Skip Schumaker and a slate of new coaches.
The Rangers will look to replace the two fan-favorites via free agency or trade
Ranger fans embraced Garcia's emotional style of play as he grew from a castoff from the St. Louis Cardinals and became one of the best defensive right-fielders in team history while becoming a postseason hero as the ALCS MVP.
Jonah Heim won the hearts of Ranger fans with his blue-collar approach to the catcher position, an uncanny knack for handling pitching staffs, plus defense, and the ability to hit for power from both sides of the plate.
Now, Young and the organization will likely pursue their replacements via trade or free agency. Names to keep an eye on are Fernando Tatis Jr, Kyle Tucker, Mike Yastrzemski, Max Kepler, Sterling Marte, and Lane Thomas.
At catcher, J.T. Realmuto, Victor Caratini, Danny Jansen, Christian Vasquez, and Jams McCann will all be available this winter.
The sweeping non-tendering decisions definitely represent a turning point for the Rangers who finished 2025 at 81-81 despite leading the league in team pitching ERA and wining the team Gold Glove award.
