Rangers once again enter offseason needing to rebuild bullpen from the ground up

Last year, the biggest priority was the bullpen. Nothing has changed for the Rangers this year.

The Rangers are facing yet another bullpen crisis and how Chris Young and Skip Schumaker decide to attack it will be a major storyline to follow this offseason.

This year was a bullpen whirlwind for the Rangers. In season Injuries, unforeseen failed rehab assignments and a lack of top-tier talent lead to a series of problems for the team.

Luckily, this is an easy year to get a bulk amount of arms in free agency with are many names available to sign. The only problem is how the Rangers plan to do so while cutting salary.

Which Rangers' bullpen arms are locked in for 2026?

Jacob Webb, Josh Sborz, Robert Garcia and Luis Curvelo currently are the only arms either under contract or under control for 2026. Four players do not make a bullpen.

Prospects like Marc Church and Emiliano Teodo are likely to get a shot so that brings the list to six which is still not enough.

Jacob Latz is another name that is not certain for the bullpen or starting rotation. His 2025 performance should have him transition to full-time starter but the return of Cody Bradford could relegate him back to the pen.

How will the Rangers' bullpen be filled out?

There is likely to be a high amount of movement regarding free agent bullpen arms. Arms such as Ryan Helsley, Devin Williams and maybe even Edwin Diaz headline the class but the class is deep.

Arms likely leaving include Shawn Armstrong, Danny Coulombe and Chris Martin. They contributed big time this year and are either looking for a better contender at the end of their career or a pay bump the Rangers can't afford.

An internal option that could be interesting is Kumar Rocker. He flat out failed in 2025 to be productive but could still get back to his 100 mph potential and be easily best utilized as a reliever for Texas if needed.

It is getting old not having a consistent bullpen. Ever since 2023, it has seemed like a revolving door. Arms like Kirby Yates, Jose Leclerc, Aroldis Chapman and David Robertson among others have come and gone.

Getting guys to sign for multiple years could be a major likelihood this offseason. It will be hard to sign multiple higher level guys but getting one or two arms on a 2-3 year deal with options could bring some consistency.

Players like Phil Maton, Devin Williams or Hunter Harvey could be some options. Getting players on these deals would be big for 2026 and the future.

It is yet to be seen what Skip Schumaker will desire in his bullpen. Based on what he had in Miami, he leans more towards velocity and swing and miss. It is a common trend for MLB teams that the Rangers have seemingly been on a mission to deny.

It will not be easy to solve all the problems in one season but it is possible. They seemingly fixed a lot of the non-ninth inning problems but that lead to a flawed philosophy. Embracing new age thoughts is something that needs to happen.

It won't be easy to find the solution. Bullpen roll over is common in todays game across the league. Fighting to add meaningful free agent arms will be paramount in the turnaround fans hope 2026 becomes.
