There are several top moments throughout a Major League Baseball season but there's hardly any moment better than a player making their big league debut.
And each year those debuts are vitally important to the team's success, whether for its just for the day or for years to come. This year, the Rangers will rely on a handful of those themselves and the leading candidate for that is slugging outfielder Alejandro Osuna.
Osuna was signed as an international free agent out of Mexico in October 2020 and made his professional debut the following season. In four seasons the 22-year-old is hitting .277/.368/.507 with 38 home runs 186 RBIs, 66 doubles, 84 stolen bases and an .807 OPS. With last year being a breakout year with 18 home runs and 61 runs driven in.
The lefty took spring training by storm, every day doing something that would cause heads to turn and surprise every player, coach and fan. Bruce Bochy consistently raved about him calling him the hottest hitter on the roster more than once. On March 16, Bochy told Dallas Morning News' Evan Grant that he's been extremely impressed by the 22-year-old, especially after drawing two late walks that same day.
"He doesn't stop impressing you," Bochy said. "I was glad he got up there in that moment. I wanted to see it. He was aggressive but he still took pitches. The guy's done everything well on both sides."
On Friday, Osuna was officially sent down to Triple-A Round Rock where he will start the season. He was one of the last minor leaguers to be reassigned, with just five days remaining until Opening Day. He finished the spring with 32 at-bats, hitting .438/.536/.719, one home run, four doubles, one triple, seven RBIs, two stolen bases and a 1.256 OPS.
For Osuna to make his MLB Debut this season it woild mean an injury or two from members of the outfield. While that would not be ideal, it's something that could happen and if Osuna was called up, we might still be in good shape with the power-hitting, speedy 22-year-old.
Which other Rangers minor leaguers could make their MLB debut in 2025?
The Rangers have a deep farm system of ready to go talent pool in baseball. While only two Rangers are in MLB Pipeline's Top 100 list, several others have been successfully in pro ball and provide Texas with a wealth of opportunities in the future.
Jax Biggers, 27, is one of those seasoned pros within the organization. Biggers was drafted in the fifth round of the 2019 draft fresh off his Arkansas Razorbacks team finishing as runners-up in the College World Series to Oregon State.
A seasoned minor leaguer, Biggers have played six seasons for a handful of Texas affiliates. In that span he's hit .255 with 23 home runs, 213 runs batted in, 75 doubles and 63 stolen bases. While not known for his power, Biggers is a reliable defender on the left side of the infield as well as a consistent on-base guy.
Biggers spent seven games in big league camp this spring, hitting .286 with a home run, double, two RBIs and a 1.232 OPS. If he were to make his debut in 2025 it would likely mean some injury concerns but if that were the case, Biggers' professionalism and consistency should give him a good shot to get called up.
The next choice would be pitcher Emiliano Teodo. The right-handed fireballer for a bit was looking to be a close to lock an Opening Day roster spot due to this spring success. Teodo was a bright spot among the young arms this spring to a tune of 4 1/3 scoreless innings and six strikeouts. Fans thought he'd be a great closer but he was sent down to minor league camp on March 12, as Texas is hoping to continue to develop him as a starter and get him consistent reps.
However, there. might be a time this season where Texas will need a bullpen arms and he seems to be a leading candidate to fill that role. And if that time comes, dare I say he will be the greatest addition
