Rangers rival Victor Robles might be done for the year after bat throwing freakout

The outfielder is likely to receive a somewhat lengthy suspension from Major League Baseball, pushing his return to Seattle's lineup back a bit more.

Seattle Mariners outfielder Victor Robles is making baseball headlines on Monday after a bat throwing meltdown while rehabbing an injury in the minor leagues over the weekend.

Robles, 28, has been missing from Seattle's lineup since early April when he dislocated his shoulder on an attempted diving catch into the stands. The outfielder just recently returned to game action via rehab assignments to build up strength and return to the Mariner's roster as their postseason push continues.

However, during Robles' fifth minor league rehab game on Sunday with Triple-A Tacoma, he was almost hit by a fastball from Joey Estes. Although he was able to foul the pitch off, Robles lost his cool after it being nearly his fourth hit by pitch in five games.

After it seems like he was shaking off the near miss, Robles turned to Estes and in one fell swoop launched his bat toward the righty. He was immediately ejected from the game but it wasn't until after he had to be contained from charging the mound and throwing a bucket of sunflower seeds onto the field.

Robles' apology won't get him out of trouble waiting for him from MLB

There's frustation from consistenly getting hit by high-speed fastballs near the hands or head, then there's a total loss of temper. The latter more represents what Robles did on Sunday.

Following the game, Robles issued an apology on Instagram admitting that he let his frustrations get the better of him and he reacted in a way he wasn't proud of. While it seems the sincerity was there and we all let moments get the best of us, this doesn't seem like the incident will fly by without consequences from Major League Baseball.

The best comparison I can give was Manny Machado back in 2014 who got in trouble for throwing his bat at the end of a swing. Angry about two in tight pitches, he attempted to hit A's pitcher Fernando Abad but instead flew in direction of third base. Machado was ejected and later suspended five games.

There's no telling to what extent MLB will hit Robles with on a suspension but comparing it to Machado's incident, the intent is sorta similar. If Machado was able to get just a five-game suspension, it's imagineable that Robles could end with a similar fate.

Either way it doesn'y help Seattle who is currently in a tight race for the AL West Division with the Houston Astros, trailing the defending division champs by only 1.5 games but firmly holding on to an AL Wild Card spot with 37 games left to go.

Texas is slightly out of the mix trailing the division by 7.5 games and outside of the wild card race 5.5 games back after a tough 2-8 stretch over their last 10 games.
