Rangers and Royals following nearly identical season scripts to kick off 2025

Both teams have heavily relied on their strong pitching due to the struggling performances of their respective offense throughout the first half of the season.

The Texas Rangers enjoyed the off day on Monday after going 5-1 last week and riding a current streak of seven wins in their last eight games. Now, they set to host the Kansas City Royals in Arlington for three games starting Tuesday.

Speaking of the Rangers and Royals, if you take a gander at the American League team stats 71 games into the season, you will notice the stark similarities between the two.

Both apparently got together at their spring training facility in Surprise, Arizona back in March and decided that they would write one script for the season and both follow it without fail. Great pitching, poor hitting.

Rangers and Royals following similar 2025 regular season script to start the year

Texas and Kansas City have piggybacked on their excellent pitching staffs

The Rangers lead the American League with an impressive 3.10 team ERA mark so far this season. The Royals are not far behind flashing a 3.44 ERA, which is currently good for third in the American League. Both are among the top six in Major League Baseball.

Both teams have used their stable of solid pitchers to hover around the .500 record mark most of the season. Kris Bubic, who is an early Cy Young candidate, has a 1.92 ERA over 78 1/3 innings pitched but his 5-4 win-loss record doesn't stick out because the Royals fail to consistently score runs.

Just like Bubic and Michael Wacha have done for Kansas City, Texas has gotten performances from Jacob deGrom, Tyler Mahle and Nathan Eovaldi to make this record possible. We can't forget as well, the solid work from the bullpens.

The Rangers have ridden a hot streak, winning seven of their last eight to get back to even at 36-36. On the other end, the Royals have lost six in a row to fall four games under .500 at 34-38, which led to the dreaded "players only meeting" a couple of days ago.

Rangers and Royals have struggled to hit a groove offensively

It is a good thing that both teams have had some of the best pitching in the league this year, because the offenses have sputtered throughout most of the first half.

The Rangers have gotten hot recently, scoring runs at a much better clip during their last eight games, but still have only scored 265 runs, which ranks 25th in MLB and their batting average as a team is .229 is better than only four teams league-wide.

It's a similar story for the Royals, as they are one of the four teams that have scored fewer runs than the Rangers at 237. Which would mean they too would be far below their current record if it wasn't for the Cy Young-esque pitching of Bubic, alongside Wacha and the Royals' pen.

We'll see how it plays out as the Rangers appear to be turning a corner at the dish while the Royals have been circling the drain with the bats recently. Hopefully, these trends will continue at Globe Life Field this week.
