Rangers should pace out Jacob deGrom's starts during these final two months

He's given up back-to-back five earned run outings. The topic should be at least a consideration.

Fans have not had to hold their breath much this year with deGrom "deGrominating" on the mound all year long which has been a spectacle worth watching.

The question of if deGrom would make 25 starts this year is almost answered, yes. The righty that has the pedigree of an all-time great has only been slowed by injuries in Texas outside of his last two starts.

Texas Rangers General Manager Ross Fenstermaker has already voiced that he has no worries about deGrom following his last couple starts. It is clear that the front office sees it as a blip rather than a trend.

Home runs have been deGrom's killer

He has surrendered 10 runs in his last 10.1 innings with five home runs hit off of him during those innings. The home runs have been rather shocking in name value with Kevin Newman, Taylor Ward, Jorge Polanco, Julio Rodriguez and JP Crawford.

This is a concerning trend down. Prior to the July 28 game against the Angels, he had not lost a game since May 26. He would earn back-to-back losses, despite making history being the fastest pitcher to record 1,800 strikeouts ever on August 3 against Seattle.

In the season following his full recovery from Tommy John, it is understandable for him to be feeling extra fatigue to this point. To find when he has last pitched this late into the season, you have to go back to 2019.

He hasn't looked particularly comfortable in his last two games as well. He has had constant glances back down to his shoe placement on the rubber following pitches that had fans concerned at first that he had an injury. It is something to note that he may be dealing with mechanic problems that can lead to injuries similar to how they did prior to his Tommy John surgery.

Should the Rangers give deGrom extra rest between starts these final two months?

All of this has lead to the questioning of whether he should make his next scheduled start. There is pitching a plenty in Arlington that has made deGrom a luxury rather than a necessity.

There is no doubt in his importance to the team which is why the question needs to be raised. He likely needs his next outing pushed back at the minimum. Skipping over his next start, slated for Saturday against the Phillies is a strong possibility.

Bochy and company have decided to do this multiple times already this season. It has yielded a positive season for deGrom and that might best case for right now.

Trying to conserve deGrom for the future and have him in the present is very conflicting currently. He is needed for the playoff push but having him in the future is also needed.

We will likely get our answer in the post-game following Wednesday's game against the Yankees or on the day off Thursday. I would expect him to start this weekend but it will likely be swapped with Patrick Corbin and have deGrom pitching Sunday rather than Saturday.
