After jumping on to the scene five seasons ago, Adolis Garcia has been a staple for the organization and beloved by the fanbase.
His 2023 heroics in the American League Championship Series and World Series regardless has cemented his legacy within the organization. However, baseball still reared its ugly head last year, which left a lot of people in disbelieve and asking "What have you done for me lately?" which in all honesty, was not much.
Over 154 games last season, he batted .244/.284/.400/.684, with 25 home runs, 85 RBI's, and130 hits, all of which were career lows for him.
But he won't be phased by a down year. In fact, he is using it as extra motivation to come into 2025 and show that he is still a massive force of nature that pitchers should fear every time he steps in the batter's box.
What went wrong for Adolis Garcia in 2024?
Despite any indication that a set of injuries (oblique and knee) suffered in 2023 played a role in his disappointing season, both Garcia and President of Baseball Operations Chris Young denied that idea.
The truth of the matter is simple, he was lost at the plate and with each passing day of unproductive at-bats, the confidence wavered as well. Among the counting numbers his metrics and approach took a decline as well. He also lost speed on his swing, chased more pitches and missed even more.
But the real throne in his side was the fastball. Among the 1,531 fastball Garcia faced in 2024, he only batted .203 and slugged .369. A solid difference from the year prior, where he hit .237 and slugged .524 against the fastball.
Then the extra added level of worry came on the defensive side in right field. Usually a plus-plus defender he suddenly was among the worst in the league finishing the year in the bottom five percentile in outs above average (-12) and fielding run value (-10), according to Baseball Savant.
Adolis Garcia spent the winter reinventing his swing, now he sets a lofty goal for himself in 2025
Garcia put in the work during the offseason, mostly focusing on his swing. He spent the winter with the team in Arlington examining what went wrong and ironing out the kinks.
"Yeah, I had a little bit of an extra movement in my swing,” García told MLB.com's Kennedi Landry. “That's what I worked with the team and hitting coaches to try to eliminate these movements in the swing. … Last year, with the short offseason, there was less time to prepare. That kind of hurt a little bit, not making the playoffs, but this year I’ve had plenty more time to work on things. I feel better prepared. I’m ready to go, and it looks great.”
On Wednesday, in true Adolis Garcia fashion he shared that he's fully healthy and ready to show you why he has become so feared at the plate. Oh yeah, and he's eyeing to hit 50 home runs this season.
The closest his gotten to that goal is during the 2023 season, finishing with 39 home runs. Reviewing his power, his ability and track record there's really no reason to doubt him, especially when it is said with such confidence.
But there will be some doubters this year, they may not be extremely loud but they will be there. It's up to Garcia to go out and remind people who he is.
Adolis Garcia said his goal is to hit 50 homers this season. He shared that his knees feel healthy and strong and that he’s worked on improving his bat speed.
