Rangers trade piece of Joey Gallo Yankees package to Blue Jays

While we wait to see if the Texas Rangers sell off any of their big stars or have some other such surprise up their sleeves, we have trade news to report. The Rangers are sending infielder Josh Smith to the Toronto Blue Jays.

The return coming back is lefty reliever Adam Macko, who has previously worked as a starter in the minor leagues but this season has exclusively been a one-inning reliever. This year, he's posted a 4.91 ERA over 22 innings pitched.

Smith was at one point one of the jewels of the Joey Gallo trade and looked to have a bright future in Arlington. While there had been flashes of his potential at times, it was a lot of stop-and-go with Smith up until this season.

After winning the second base job in spring training following the Marcus Semien-Brandon Nimmo trade, Smith quickly became an issue in the lineup. His cold start was quickly cut short by glute and wrist injuries, followed by a bout with viral meningitis.

That led to him ultimately being yo-yo'd back and forth between Arlington and Round Rock once he finally recovered from his illness.

Smith's 2026 line sits at .213/.299/.272. The Blue Jays will hope that a change of scenery (and country) helps get him back on track and at least hit as he did in 2025, when he posted a .251/.336/.366 line.

Macko is a 25-year-old who last ranked in Toronto's top-30 in 2025, coming in at No. 16. He pairs a fastball that averages 94.5 miles per hour with a slider, curveball, and changeup. The slider is his bread-and-butter secondary, with a 41% usage rate.

He had a 5.06 ERA in 18 appearances (10 starts) and 64 innings last year while hurling in Triple-A for the Jays. This season, he has made 19 appearances, all in relief, and tossed 24 1/3 innings in Triple-A with a 4.07 ERA.

Overall, this provides no real clarity for the Rangers' broader trade deadline plan (if there is one). With that said, the Rangers' surplus of infield depth made Smith expendable, and while Macko might not be overly exciting, perhaps there's some untapped potential there.
